@KashifShah> politely ask them to remove you from the mentions? Some apps have a Mute Conversation feature, so if you've lost interest in a thread, you can untag yourself. If the thread itself still interests you, but certain people are posting... unhelpful stuff, you can just mute them. FediLab has an option to mute people for a fixed period of time (an hour, week, month etc), which I love.@originalg@LovesTha

@strypey @KashifShah @originalg Is the 'Mute Conversation' supported by activity pub or just implemented locally in the instance? As if it is an Activity Pub feature I'm disappointed not all clients implement that.

@LovesTha > Is the 'Mute Conversation' supported by activity pub or just implemented locally in the instance? It seems to be available in all the third-party apps I've used with this Mastodon instance (eg Pinafore, FediLab). A number of them work with any server software that supports the Mastodon API (Pleroma, Akkoma etc), so it doesn't seem like it's only a Mastodon feature.@KashifShah @originalg

@originalg> I'm on YuitoNot familiar with it, but it appears to be a fork of Tusky. I have another fork of Tusky called Husky, and Mute Conversation doesn't seem to be implemented there either. It's not ideal, but you can have any number of clients logged in to the same account. I sometimes switch between FediLab and Pinafore, because there's things I find easier to do in each.@LovesTha @KashifShah

@LovesTha @strypey @originalg I don’t recall seeing anything about mute in the ActivityPub spec. I haven’t yet read the whole thing though.I suspect that mute is intended to be an application-level feature. There might be another ActivityStreams extension spec that speaks to mute as a feature.Worth it to you for me to dig a little at some point?

@KashifShah @strypey @originalg Nah, it's not something I'll act on, just interesting to know. What little I've gleamed of the protocol, mute would be hard to have honored in the protocol and would be more effective in the clients.

@LovesThaIt might be in the client-to-server part of the spec? Nobody really uses that yet (the Mastodon API is the defacto c2s protocol ATM). When the spec was being written the population of the 'verse was fragmented, tiny, and mostly well behaved. Later we had inward migrations of alt-right folks booted from Titter, and queer folks who left Tumblr due to the porn ban, and the two... did not mix well. Which was when more moderation tools started to get developed.@KashifShah @originalg

@strypey @KashifShah @originalg it only being in the c2s spec means the conversation keeps getting sent to your server still

@LovesTha> the conversation keeps getting sent to your server stillDoes that matter, if you don't see it? It's possible other people on your server are still interested in the conversation, and would likely be unhappy if a normal user account had the power to mute a conversation for everyone on the server.@KashifShah @originalg

@LovesThaI> Raises the odd idea of tagging someone on a server you want a post to appear on the federated feed ofI don't think that's how it works. AFAIK the federated feed is every post from everyone who's being followed by at least one user account on the instance.@KashifShah @originalg

@strypey Experimental evidence is solid, reply publically tagging lovestha@mtgjudge.social (my account on a near single user instance) if the post appears in the admin of that server's public feed, evidence found.
