If you send a professional email introducing two people—one senior and one junior—who do you expect to write the next "thank you for the introduction" email?Let's say neither requested the introduction; you just think the two people would like to know each other (but you asked permission from the senior person).#EmailEtiquette #CorporateLife #BusinessCommunication

@grammargirl Either... ? Not sure there is an etiquette for who goes first, IMO. And honestly, I would also let the junior person know you were giving out their email too - both courtesy and looking for spam.

@grammargirl In the world I want to live in, whoever reads the email first. In this world? Totally unsure.

@grammargirl The senior person writes next to help set the terms of the engagement. Do they want to meet or trade emails or just be aware of each other?

@grammargirl My instinct is that whomever needs something from the other goes first, with a thanks for the introduction.

@grammargirl Whoever sees the email first, or perhaps whoever is keenest

@grammargirl Really, either way. It’s a power relationship. Who has more need of the other? That’s not always a question of seniority.

@grammargirl The one who is more motivated to persue the relationship. Is the senior person looking to mentor? Is the junior person looking to expand their network? I don't see it as a junior/senior thing.

@grammargirl the senior person who was primed should, doesn't mean they actually will... If the junior person is inclined to get some face time with the senior, they might jump all over it. In my experience, nobody responds. Or even reads the email.

@grammargirl I voted senior because I think they should reinforce their willingness to participate and signal to the junior person how to proceed, but I don’t think there’s anything *wrong* with the junior writing next, especially if you provide a particular reason you wanted to introduce them.

@grammargirl I'm interested in the motivation of each. One is thankful they have much to gain; the other understands that quick responses clear their inbox, whether they reach out to the other is a different story.
