I read somewhere that most opposition to environment initiatives is because on paper they sound nice, but in reality it looks like a company dumping thousands of gallons of waste in to the drinking water gets a slap on the wrist, but Joe Dirt can't get his work truck to pass inspection and gets financially fucked as a result

Climate change hoax is just to get people to accept lower standards of living and embrace depopulation for the most part. Oh, and also central planning and even less government accountability.ie Climate Change means forcing productive farmers to shutdown to both lower the food supply and get their land cheap – just to make commie block housing for 15 min cities stretched ass to ass.

@Moon I think it's a handy reminder for people that positions on such things are more like mighty faggots than like thin sticks. The opposition to the climate summit does not merely believe that the climate summit's premises are wrong, but also that their methods are wrong, and also that their methods are very harmful--or else, the opposition would not really care enough to register as 'opposition'. An example of this in daily life is Oprah Winfrey spiritualism, of "A Course in Miracles" and similar books pushed by her, that give people the idea that their *thoughts* physically attract the thought-of consequences. Think your husband is cheating on you? Then he'll cheat on you! Quiet implication: the bad things in your life that you didn't think of are caused by the bad thoughts of your neighbors. Very load implication: you can perform magic by thinking deliberately. "My husband is not cheating on me. My husband would never cheat on me. Even though he divorced me and blocked all my social media accounts and calls me a crazy witch and tells me to respect the restraining order, my husband wants to get back together. My husband is going to call me soon and we'll get back together."Do I think that's all wrong? Yeah. Do I care? Not enough to do more than occasionally comment on it, because I don't think it's that threatening. I've never once flushed a toilet and then had to flush it ten more times because some politician was a fan of this nonsense.

@MoonIt properly shows the lack of valid argument on the side of the naysayer. It doesn't reflect the fact that, especially in America, if you pass a bill for any one of those things, it will contain 2-5x as much funding for other things, any money that was for the original purpose will be eaten every step of the way through waste fraud and abuse, and a certain amount of it will be intentional, and for the sole and exclusive purpose of making "green" look bad.And so you never actually get the better world. Just the bill.

big X to doubt, first the premise seems dubious, second extraction efficiencies will increase, then there’s also thorium, and waste reactors. I don’t want to assume it’s a panacea but we really don’t know how good it can get with the government induced dark ages we’ve had.

@genmaicha @Moon Why is it 15-minute cities and not 15 minute villages filled with plenty of space for greenery around? Actually getting to know the people where you live because you aren't all squashed into high-rise apartments and having to use the small convenience store across the road? I kid you not, 15-minute city means to one person that they built an apartment block and claim that provides more income for the local small convenience store across the road from them. Hopeless.

@Moon "Green jobs" means you pay more people more money to do way more work to get what you already have now. Economic progress is the exact opposite. We have nice things now because 90% of the farmers lost their jobs with the invention of machinery.Over 100k people die every year from extreme cold, far more than other "climate" causes. Banning the best, cheapest heating methods by far like natural gas will cause many more to die.https://financialpost.com/opinion/bjorn-lomborg-climate-change-and-deaths-from-extreme-heat-and-cold

@Moon "livable cities" is a completely meaningless subjective platitude. In practice, it usually means you have to avoid poop on the sidewalks and raving lunatics."healthy"? Spread of disease happens far less with disposable bags etc. the climate people want to eliminate."energy independence"? China dominates all steps of solar production. Oh and Powerwall is only warrantied for 10 years. It doesn't last. You'll be dependent on more continuously coming from overseas.https://www.statista.com/chart/24687/solar-panel-global-market-shares-by-production-steps/

@nosleepI'm an engineer so I personally like solutions of the kind @TechConnectify makes videos about; For example he uses a Magical (I'm guessing RasPi) Box to only turn on his water heater when his hourly electric rate is low. Because it'll hold a hot temperature for multiple days, even if some water is used, you simply don't ever notice that your water heater is powered only at night. He also uses the thermal mass of his home as a battery, for example chilling it down unreasonably cold during the early morning hours, then not having to use AC for most of the day, and peak periods. I see it as cool, a fun project, and if we scaled it, could make renewables more realistic, and ultimately put a sizeable dent in usage in aggregate. The problem is, your average red voter sees that and says "hahaha, you peasents have to *manage* these things! You see I just like using the things and paying the bill. Imagine being so *poor* that you have to turn off your water heater. Like how *poor* are you that you have to do that? You know where you have to do that? That's right! *Poor* countries with *poor* people." and now it's a matter of pride. @Moon

@sj @Moon You can change the “China PRC Dominates…” simply by mandating they be made elsewhere, they do so largely because they don’t care about pollution, workers rights, all that good jazz although their cost of human labor has gotten a lot higher than it used to be.“Livable cities” I’d add ideally I wouldn’t feel a general need to carry a gun except to be a citizen. And I’d add, how livable are they for the elderly? Including those who need access to healthcare they can’t walk to, or are beyond this new 15 minute metric.(Yeah, I know, the Greens just want us to die….)

@ThatWouldBeTelling @Moon The things that make cities a pleasure to live in have nothing to do with climate, or are actively opposed by climate activists. Usually because, like sufficient road capacity, they allow people to go where they want when they want, even when, much of the time, nobody else is going.Remember the racist bridges keeping poor people and their buses in? That, except applied to everybody, is the "15 min" "livable" city plan. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/11/10/robert-moses-saga-racist-parkway-bridges/

@Moon @ThatWouldBeTelling Yeah that's baloney, the majority of roads around the last 4 places I've lived were not capacity filled. Regardless, do you know what that "fill capacity" literally is? It means more people go to more places that they want. Instead of the 3 cafes or 1 park in a block or two, they can visit hundreds. Instead of whatever generic fitness class is on the corner, they can take their kid to a specialized tumbling one. Stopping that "capacity" "fill" is just pure misanthropy.

@sj @Moon Yeah, that was a very good posting. To a degree it really hits on control, which is why the push ICE vehicles out of existence in favor of EVs while not upgrading the grid and shutting down most electrical power production all makes sense.Of course, caught in a holiness spiral the California Greens are going to shut down freight transportation in their state … as a BigCryo on Hacker News commented, “That should lead to a great deal of weight loss in California” and we all know how bad that problem is in the US….Although, seriously, what does the nation do after the LA and Long Beach harbors have to shut down?

@ThatWouldBeTelling @Moon It is all about control. One of the most fascinating ways you can see this is to watch many people who claim to care about carbon emissions, and efficient use of space and demand public transit, etc. always seem to ignore or criticize electric scooters, which take even less room than bikes, zero emission, etc. And yeah, California is insane.

@Moon it's the same as the usual daft attempts at propaganda that you get on Reddit all day long. Classic example of people who only live in their world trying to preach to the choir. Some of those things have nothing to do with any climate change work (livable cities?), some of them don't follow directly from doing climate change work, and many of them don't actually make a better world (how does "green jobs" make the world better in any way?).The truth is, the work that needs to be done to achieve most of those things (such as preserving rainforests) competes directly with climate change stuff for funding and effort and attention. This hullabaloo over nothing actually takes away from the work that needs to be done to solve real, tangible problems with actual solutions. The Amazon is shrinking, the pacific is full of plastic partly because these tools won't shut up about carbon dioxide.

@lispi314 @Moon yes, I'm aware of these, I was considering installing one just a few months ago and running a bunch of numbers but a) you're just shifting burning the gas to a bigger powerplant since (unless you are in a hydro area) renewables are far more expensive and b) if you factor into account what people really end up paying for equipment, install, etc. they're usually still more expensive.
