paging @futurebird - these absolute piles of ants were a sight to see at Snake Lake in Tacoma.

@inherentlee I think these might be wood ants! They are famous for coming out in spring to absorb the warmth of the sun. They let their little bodies warm up as much as possible then go deep deep into their pine needle nest. They then stay in the cold parts of the nest transferring the heat to the walls and brood chambers deep in the earth. Once they get cold again they repeat the action. Since there isn't much food to collect in spring they collect sunlight and warmth instead!

@futurebird @inherentlee Very nice. A passive solar battery. Each is recharged repeatedly. And it’s an ant. #SolarPunk.

@Pollinators @futurebird @inherentlee i would say the whole process on the colony level is a living heat pump.

@glowlHeat pumps are usually used to move heat from the colder to the warmer place - opposite the natural flow.Technically, this would be forced convection - like a computer fan or blood circulation taking heat out. That is common in biology, but usually at the sub-body level. What should we call this? Locomotory convection? Colony-driven heat circulation? What's the term used in the litterature? @Pollinators @futurebird @inherentlee
