Pornhub and some affiliated sites are now blocking Utah-based IP addresses due to Utah's new privacy and security invasive age verification law. Some religious websites are cheering, since they never wanted anyone to see porn in the first place.

@lauren I don’t know if it’s still the case, but a few years ago I saw a graph that showed Utah was #1 in the country for online porn consumption.

@lauren it would be interesting to see reputable VPN providers (say, NordVPN or ExpressVPN) to see if they capture sign in data from this period.

@lauren maybe my opinion is unpopular, but I wish porn wasn’t so readily available, period. I know some people make a living with this, but it’s so damaging on so many levels. For those producing it and for those consuming it.

@lauren I assumed that this was the underlying goal in the first place (along with provoking a court challenge that can escalate to a captured SCOTUS that will rule in their favor)

@karinnelson Porn, broadly defined, goes back to the caves, perhaps earlier. Attempts to suppress it at various times in human history, no matter where, have all failed miserably, even when not tied to religious fanaticism -- which such attempts often are.

@lauren I know. Oldest profession etc etc etc. But there is evidence that letting it go rampant and unchecked may cause issues in young adults, especially when the realty doesn’t match the expectation. Alcohol is as old as humanity itself, yet we don’t give it to kids.

@karinnelson "We don't give it to kids" is a culturally-specific statement. In some parts of the world, that statement is not applicable. In any case, suppression of porn is impossible, even if every commercial porn site was abolished. Amateur porn is everywhere, and always will be. Attempts to suppress porn in particular have historically gone hand in hand with fascism/religious fanaticism (to be sure, often in utterly hypocritical ways).

@karinnelson @lauren ...and yet countries with lower drinking ages (even those that allow kids to have a glass of wine on occasion) generally have less problems with alcohol

@CodieneC @karinnelson As I'm sure you're aware, the U.S. once attempted to ban alcoholic beverages. It didn't turn out well.

@lauren I lived in Italy for 12 years. The occasional sip of wine at dinner for an older kid is happening. But it’s also not the norm. I am German and I grew up seeing naked bodies on TV. Nakedness is normal for me. And there is nothing dirty about it. Alcohol was accessible to me, and I didn’t have a desire to try it, because it was nothing special. When you make a big deal out of something and ban it, it becomes more desirable. I get that. But

@lauren but as an occasional porn user myself, I have seen what it does when it goes unchecked. I have seen the abominations that are out there, that shouldn’t be in mainstream. This shit is messed up. I believe by banning it we would make it worse. But not controlling it at all isn’t good either.

@karinnelson Control of porn means censorship. That's the reality. It's not like alcohol which is a physical commodity that needs to be shipped around in the physical world (at least not anymore -- of course porn *used* to be a physical commodity as in physical photographs, films, tapes, etc.) Censorship (aka this kind of "control") inevitably plays into the hands of the fascists and religious fanatics, even with the best of initial intentions. History is clear on this point.Far more alarming is that the "age verification" schemes being associated with such "controls" present enormous risks to adults being able to use the Internet without government tracking and tracing of their every activity on the Net. Already there's legislation (state and federal) that would require EVERYONE to be age verified for any social media access, and some calls to expand that to "anything inappropriate for children." Wanna see how that works out? Take a look at China.

@lauren Censorship at the source doesn’t equal dictatorship. We censor hate speech. Racism. Child porn. I just think mainstream porn has taken a dangerous turn and I wish there was a way to control it better. Gangbang, bondage, rape. It may all be fake, but the subliminal messaging is damaging. Human dignity is untouchable. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

@karinnelson CSAM in particular is a terrible problem, but is still a good example of how even the most despicable content still flourishes, and how attempts to control it trigger ancillary concerns. E.g., how CSAM is used as an argument against end-to-end crypto, etc. which would drastically reduce law abiding citizens' security and privacy if strong e-e crypto were unavailable or required to have backdoor access.

@lauren But CSAM is illegal and unless a user goes out of their way, you don't just stumble across it. At least, I have never. Making some things illegal doesn't stamp them out, but it does make it less accessible. I'm just saying that I wish there was a way to turn back the flood. Torture porn, rape... it's all mainstream now and I wish it wasn't. I have a hard time saying, oh well, it’s out there now, we can't risk a police state so we just leave it.

@karinnelson @lauren I wish a lot of things were less readily available, because of the harm they do... but I think we need to be pretty careful about things like this, because while it's pretty effective to change regulations for 'light trucks', sex work can EASILY move into the shadows.
