I really can't stand it when ESL Europeans swear excessively in English as a crutch to better get their point across. Using "fucking" as an adjective doesn't make your argument more persuasive.

@PonyPanda@freespeechextremist.com it's hard to stop using swear words excessively when you learn english from american movies. i only learned how to speak without swearing every sentence after living in the uk for a while and going to school and other places where it's not acceptable to swear every day

@fucking yeah. And we usually don't take them seriously. They're either children or immature adults. It disgusts me to see Europeans resorting to the same tricks that children do to be heard. Not because they themselves are childish but they must assume that this childish way of speaking is what makes people listen to you in the Anglosphere.

@emma I'd heard that it comes from movies but... there -are- other elements of Anglophone culture that allow for this. Like... black culture. We swear a lot in Australia but... when we swear... we tend to make it count. Swearing in Australia still has the quality of an "oath."There's something about the way soy leftists like Destiny swear that just make the profanity... dead. And this is where I tend to hear a lot of these western Europeans that are already SocDems. Because what soy leftists in the Anglosphere want tends to be Social Democracy like they have in western European countries. So you have this chain of Hollywood swearing -> Soy Anglophones -> European ESLs.It's just disgusting.

@emma it's not always the case. And I don't think it's about classiness but it's more about sincerity. Australia is a hot and unpleasant place with lots of things that would get you to swear. We also have a vestigial criminal ethos. When we swear.... it's honest. We have had a hard day and we don't need to deal with anymore bullshit from someone that's insincere. There's also something about profanity that declares you as a sort of iconoclast or rebel. You are, after all, profaning that which is sacred. And if you're an iconoclast or rebel... you have to be tough and actually a dissident. But... people are using profanity not to be profane. They're using it to "fit in" which is what disgusts me. The Europeans is using swear words which you should be using to declare yourself outside of the establishment to better ingratiate themselves with the establishment. It's such a perverse inversion.

@emma I'd like to elaborate on this a bit more... in Australia... we do have a sort of try-hard hipster class that is similar to America's hipsters that drink Pabst Blue Ribbon. They borrow bogan/ocker terms and say things like "get amongst it" or "durry" semi-ironically. And yeah... they get into swearing that has the same insincerity behind it. And of course... they're not really tough people.

@PonyPanda @fucking @emma Fuck you, Factorio is great. /sIn all seriousness, a reason I'm thinking of is that in some languages, swearing just hit differently. Slavic swear words are harsh and jarring to the ear - as they should, I think. (Overused by some, but most people I know are mature enough to use them sparingly.) Compared to them, "fuck" just rolls off the tongue so nicely. It really doesn't have the same gravity for us.

@grips @emma @fucking I think that's it though. It's a reminder that what is sacred and what is profane in our language means nothing anymore. When ESL bork bork Swedish morons use "fuck" for every second word, it just tells you that profanity means nothing and foreign cultures will just use what we were taught as kids to be bad words. When these people do it... it's like they're doing an incredibly unflattering impersonation of us. This is their impression of us. Vulgar and profane.

@lina @emma @fucking @grips well that's the problem. Blacks are sacred so the word "nigger" is profane in the Anglophone west.

@PonyPanda @grips @fucking @emma but even beyond nigger, none of the words sound like they hold any weight in terms of impoliteness and rudeness, i think "cunt" was a word that at least sounded extremely harsh but it doesn't ring like that to me, could be because of the internet desensitizing people to all sords of cuss words

@lina @grips @PonyPanda @emma I'm grew up speaking english as a first language, so I do remember being reprimanded as a child for swearing. Without that, and with the prevalence of swearing in English-language media out in the world, it does seem inevitable that a lot of ESL people would just curse as a manner of speaking.

@PonyPanda Cursing in their native language is more offensive to them compared to just cursing in some other language. It's much easier to curse in English since it's more commonplace (especially in popular media and culture). Not much notable European curse words are popularized, too (unless it's a synonym for nigger but I can't seem to find much of those).

@emma @PonyPanda @grips @fucking swear words don’t feel as offensive in a foreign language, it’s a known thing. That’s not to say that different languages don’t have different offensive power though.
