Yes, I think #Biden did a great job in his first term. I appreciate and acknowledge his accomplishments. AND I am not happy he is running for a second term. I won’t pretend I am. The #DNC failed. The biggest problem with this strategy is Dems completely alienate a large chunk of their base. If we have to choose between #Fascism or teetering on the edge of dementia, most people will probably take their chances with dementia. But a whole lot of us will never forget that this was forced on us.

@kk The people telling you that Biden is teetering on the edge of dementia are lying to you.

@gdinwiddie I’ve watched many people his age be fine one day, and decline rapidly the next.

@kk @gdinwiddie Anyone can decline rapidly at any age at anytime. Biden has a good team behind him. :mastodon:

@soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie that is not inspiring or make anyone feel any better about this situation. Yes, I guess anyone can decline at any age, but you can’t argue that the statistical likelihood of it happening at 50 or 60 is anywhere near the likelihood of it happening at 80-85. It’s wild that y’all think this is ok and are shocked anyone would be upset about this. At this moment in time we deserve, as a country & party, someone who is at the top of their game.

The print for this post was a friend who called me in shock and asked if I knew Biden as running again (of course she know I must have). Her comment was “I just had to move my father to a memory care facility and he’s the same age as Biden”. She was literally distraught at the thought of him running again. It was visceral for her.

@kk @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie There is quite a big gap between "Biden's statistical likelihood of developing dementia is higher than a younger candidate's would be" and Biden is 'teetering on the edge of dementia.'" Those two statements are not at all equivalent. One is unfounded and inflammatory. You don't have to be happy he's running. However, the way our politics works, the nomination is his if he wants it, and implying he has dementia accomplishes nothing but helping his eventual GOP opponent.

@jik @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie one of my biggest frustrations is the Democratic Party’s apparent lack of urgency in this moment in history. It’s like, well he’s supposed to run so… it’s honestly so depressing. Maybe my language was inflammatory, I’ll accept that criticism. I feel like we need it though. I’m not the only one who’s just so over the Dem Party not reading the room.

@kk @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie I agree with you about the lack of urgency, but it's certainly not limited to old pols. It's also consistent with a lack of urgency felt by most of the Dem base. The argument can certainly be made that if Dem pols showed more urgency, if they actually LED, it would sway the base. However, the argument can also be made that people wouldn't listen and it would just cause Dems to lose elections. After seeing how people have handled COVID, I think that's more likely. 🤷

@jik @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie I would like for them to at least try to lead. Try anything to meet this moment, really. 😬

@kk @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie I mean, is telling the truth about what's happening the right thing to do if that would mean losing elections and handing over even more control to the fascists?I'd argue that we're in harm minimization mode at this point, and minimizing harm requires keeping as many Republicans out of office for as long as possible.

@kk @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie TLDR we're all fucked because most people would rather live within the comforting delusion that everything is fine than confront the unfortunate reality that the US and the world are facing multiple concurrent existential crises that can only be overcome through drastic change and sacrifice, and maybe not even then.

@kk @soc_i_ety @gdinwiddie I think if there is going to be drastic change it's going to have to be driven by the grassroots, not by the politicians, but unfortunately by the time enough people realize the necessity of it a great deal of harm will have been done and it'll be a long, hard slog to dig us out of the hole the fascists are digging us into.
