Man I thought kubernetes was bad until I started using ElasticSearch

@cadey@pony.social tbh it's not too bad in my experience, but there are definetly some quirks to get used to

@cadey@pony.social I mean, when I decided to start doing stuff with elasticsearch, I've spent the first couple days reading up on the architecture, really reduced unexpected things later on

@sanfierro@pony.social @cadey@pony.social I haven't had a chance to properly use it yet (because of reasons elastic cloud was essentially a requirement for work for the past while, sadly), but from a brief look I had a while ago, it doesn't really change much, which IMO is fine. Most of the quirks of elasticsearch have decent reasons, so keeping them as-is is probably the best way.

@ignaloidas @cadey In general, what are alternatives to elastic search? Like, I don't mean drop-in replacements like opensearch, I mean completely different approaches even

@sanfierro@pony.social @cadey@pony.social depends on what you really want since people use elastic for very different things. But if your goal is high quality (full text) search that you could sell, running something Lucene based is essentially your only option, and last I looked at Solr it was way slower for the usecase. If you just want somewhat acceptable search that you can still tweak a bit, Meilisearch and Manticore seem ok-ish, seemingly easier to run.I hear Postgres integrated full text search is pretty OK these days, but I'm not sure how to feel about it.For analytics and stuff, idk, haven't really dealt with that.

@ignaloidas @cadey Ah, okie. Thank you very much for sharing! Are any by any chance savvy in 3D graphics too? Like, why do we have the near clipping plane, why wouldn't the near clipping distance be exactly 0?
