People can get overzealous about deleting every "that" they find in a sentence. Here's why you sometimes need it. https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/when-to-delete-that/ #grammar #AmWriting #AmEditing

@grammargirl Is that that the that that I should delete? 🤔

@grammargirl I find myself putting more in than I take out, for clarity. I edit a lot of documents that are unintentionally scrambled or ambiguous without the needed "that"s.

@grammargirl my sister asked me just yesterday what effect I thought services like grammarly have or will have on the language. I told her that I think it only affects certain genres of written text, and not as much as some people may assume. But there is an extreme anti-that ideology that is promoted by simplistic grammar checkers. Microsoft’s grammar checker was a founding member, and I’m sure all the new services are following suit.

@abdalian Indeed!I'm curious whether ChatGPT and the like will solidify or speed up the acceptance phrases such as "tow the line" (instead of "toe the line") and "very unique."I'm not sure whether they tend to use the phrases found most often in their training data (probably?) or incorporate advice from usage guides (probably not?).

@grammargirl I also doubt that predictive models like ChatGPT pay more attention to language usage authorities than to statistical usage patterns, so I think that eggcorns like "tow the line" would have to become a common enough form (and probably the dominant form) in written Internet texts before these models would produce it regularly in responses. These things are all probability machines, so they'll just parrot the patterns of writing in their training set, I guess.
