I really don't understand why there are #matrix bridges for WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram etc., but not for #XMPP We found ways to bypass all those "no 3rd party clients" rules, but nobody managed to do it for an open protocol with a similar feature set?

@stanford I personally hate bridges, the IRC to Matrix bridge was incredibly buggy.I'd rather just run two clients or go cold turkey than deal with the issues I had with the IRC Matrix bridge.

@konomikitten To be fair, the IRC bridge is usable now.Works flawlessly for me so far.And regarding bridges, I simply don't want to run six different messenger apps all the time..Probably need a ram upgrade just to do that.

@stanford the IRC bridge can boot Matrix connected clients on Matrix for reasons: https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-appservice-irc/issues/1268

@stanford there is a bridge named Bifrost, but it's actually quite horrible and not really maintained. I guess connecting to another free network does not bring the shiny VC money 🙈

@konomikitten Mh.. that seems to be annoying. But somehow never really experienced it myself, even tho I'm in some bridged rooms.I'm not sure if that is something I never paid attention to or if that is just not a thing within my places.

@stanford Looking for #XMPP bridges to those other networks? How about https://sr.ht/~nicoco/slidge/ ?

@zash Uh, I wasn't aware that there is such broad bridge support on the XMPP side. Thanks for the note :)

@stanford Further evidence that the main problem with #XMPP is its (lack of) marketing budget, rather than anything technical?

@zash To be fair, XMPP, that is true..I wish all the work that went into Matrix would have gone into XMPP. I never felt it needed a new protocol. All the features that were "missing" from XMPP weren't really missing, they just never really got any attention in the clients. So, what we really needed were better XMPP clients..But now it's too late to really change that...So I'm instead keeping my fingers crossed that they'll eventually manage to make Matrix more like XMPP regarding performance etc. :blobcatflipped:

@stanford Good luck. I'll just continue working on Prosody and XMPP as I have for the last decade or so.

@stanford XMPP is the internet standard that does everything Matrix tries to achieve. Of course they don't want to promote it.

@stanford @zash That's funny, because what Matrix desperately needs is better clients. Or just a single decent one would be a start. 🥲

@eisfunke Haha, kinda true 😅But compared to let's say Pidgin, Element is some progressOr let's say, the client is more up-to-date with how most people use those environments these days.

@stanford @zash there's also a bunch of people who wish the work that went into XMPP went into IRC instead, kind of ironic really.

@stanford I miss key crosssigning in XMPP, so I don't always have to do a manual key match with my contacts.
