An appreciation of Eunice Foote, the suffragist and scientist who — way back in 1856 — conducted the first known experiment to demonstrate that CO2 was a heat-trapping gas ……. and who, when writing up a paper of her findings, theorized that if the Earth’s atmosphere accumulated lots of CO2, the planet would warm up alsoAlas, her work was lost to history until quite recently: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-19th-century-woman-who-predicted-global-warming-af93f6b473ceA “friend” link in case you’re not a Medium subscriber: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-19th-century-woman-who-predicted-global-warming-af93f6b473ce?sk=2132215cf9d7a17c2f7d1e43d0ffd7af

@clive @noahshachtman Thank you, without your work she would have been a Footenote to history.

@clive An honorable mention to Svante Arrhenius’ _Über den Einfluss des atmosfärischen Kohlensäuregehalts auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläche_ (1896), coining the term “greenhouse effect” in this context.

@denspier Yes! And for doing those unbelievably hard and onerous calculations by hand

@clive Actually, I can see from here, "greater in moist than dry air", meaning she discovered TWO greenhouse gases: CO2 and Water.

@clive I'm sorry to see Arrhenius de-throned as the first discoverer. For years, if somebody gave me "global warming skepticism", I would haughtily sneer: "Nobody who has seen the Arrhenius Equations can doubt them. They're mathematical proof".I don't even know if his paper HAD equations, there's just a rolling majesty to the words "Arrhenius Equations". It often shut them up.Obviously "The Foote Equations" would not land. No roll to it.

@clive — Yes, Eunice Foote was the first to demonstrate that CO₂ is a major greenhouse gas. She was not, though, as the *Medium* article declares, “the first to document the greenhouse effect” — that would have been Horace Benedict de Saussure in the 1760s, documenting the greenhouse effect caused by glass. Joseph Fourier was the first to speculate that the Earth’s atmosphere might work like a greenhouse, in 1827. Foote deserves great honor, but her work built on those previous insights.

@RoyBrander His calculations were absolutely stupendous! Done by hand and yet so good that when they first ran computer simulations in the later 20 century they arrived at conclusions pretty much the same as he had by hand decades earlier
