How do you feel about #BlueSky not federating with the #fediverse over #ActivityPub?

@jamesp@linuxrocks.online I'm betting my karma on BlueSky is cringe from the start and will always stay that way.

@gabriel What's cringe about BlueSky other than not supporting ActivityPub?

@jamesp@linuxrocks.online Anything that claims to be decentralized but doesn't equip it's users with the knowledge and/or tools to actually improve that decentralization is inherently cringe.Open Protocols + Free Software is the way, any deviation is heresy.

@gabriel@mk.gabe.rocks It's not even decentralized outside of "trusted" entities able to host "nodes", essentially off-loading hosting. That's about it. The hosts have zero autonomy or control, you're not able to deploy a server at will and build/manage a community on it. @jamesp@linuxrocks.online

@gabriel @jamesp It doesn't have any decentralisation features yet, the url think is already possible in Takahe if you care about that.

@adizThe hosts shouldn't have autonomy and control. The *users* should. The whole point is to "separate speech from reach", which I interpret as letting users be independent from the server hosting and federating their posts. It doesn't look good if they're "trusted" though. But maybe that's just a testing thing and it will open up once it's stable. Idk.@gabriel @jamesp

@Hyolobrika@berserker.town But the users don't get that autonomy either. They're still beholden to the system, algorithms, moderation decisions, in a centralized way. it allows BS to pay lip service to decentralization, without actually giving away the power in the system.@gabriel@mk.gabe.rocks @jamesp@linuxrocks.online

@Hyolobrika@berserker.town And, by the way, the Fediverse already has solutions to this problem: single user instances are a thing that anyone can do if they so desire. @gabriel@mk.gabe.rocks @jamesp@linuxrocks.online

@jamesp There are good reasons for them not to choose AP for federation. For example, see their blog post. https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/3-6-2022-a-self-authenticating-social-protocol The biggest issue I see is that they launched without working federation at all. Federation is such a major thing, It changes the whole character of the network, and the more spread out the users are on different servers, the better it is. (Having big official instances is a BAD thing for the network as a whole.) Another thing is a close second: as I understand it, BlueSky's server software is designed only for Amazon's AWS cloud. Until they change it or there are other implementations that don't have this limitation, this puts the whole network at the mercy of a single corporation. If BlueSky turns out to be worthwhile, I'm sure someone will build a bridge, just as happened with Nostr. Or maybe servers from both sides of the gap will add support for the other protocol. Or these networks will appeal to far different audiences without much overlap. The big thing is that the Fediverse doesn't need BlueSky and Nostr to fail in order to be successful.

@Hyolobrika @jamesp @gabriel I don't exactly know the details but it has something to do with webfinger likely.https://docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/domains/Should have the proper information.

@colinsmatt11Looks interesting. But, if im reading this right, it also looks like you still have to get your instance admin's permission to move to a different instance. You can't just do it unilaterally using your own domain or webfinger server.>you have to discover the user’s Webfinger handle from their Actor URI@jamesp @gabriel

@Hyolobrika @jamesp @gabriel Yup, but there's no moving accounts feature in bluesky as well at the moment since there's only one node.SilverPill's object identity proofs fep would solve this issue for AP, just needs to be implemented.
