Hallo my fediverse peeps: Does anyone here have experience with MSI laptops? After a bad experience with Asus (a repair odyssey with Asus Support now entering its sixth unsuccessful month) I’m eying an MSI Stealth Studio for work and photo editing. I just have no experience with their quality and reliability.

@khoji it depends on how much you want to spend. Framework laptops are design to be user repaired or something like Lenovo tends to be well supported international. If I need the laptop to last, I tend to buy the business class machines. MSI is hit or miss.

@owlwise13 >> MSI is hit or miss.I kind of figured that. Here in Germany they also only have *one* service operation, in Poland. ☠️

@owlwise13 I actually looked at the new Frameworks, but they‘re sold out for months and months already.

@khoji sorry about that, I didn't check their site. Lenovo has a lot of support and tend to be stable.

@owlwise13 Yes, I used Lenovo/IBM for many years and they were rock solid. It‘s just that their current offerings with 13th gen processors and dedicated GPU are quite limited. They generally have inferior GPUs and either completely soldered RAM or one slot soldered and only one slot available. And the screens are often either Full HD, which isn‘t enough, or 4K, which is silly on a laptop and just wastes battery.

@khoji the soldered ram drives me nuts. You can try: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/index.php They are linux based and you can customize them and I believe they work with Windows/10/11 you would need to double check that.

@khoji @owlwise13 Dell used to have top notch support for their Alienware laptop as it was separate from their consumer insperion and XPS line (and came with a separate Alienware service initial charge). The problem with them is they are about twice as heavy as competitors and their cooling solutions are always behind. It's hard to compete with Apple unfortunately in this area.

@Silverpantz @owlwise13 I may actually be able to go with a MacBook Pro. I’m experimenting with Windows 11 ARM under Parallels 18 on my Mac Studio, and so far everything I need seems to be running perfectly and with great performance, including Git, SVN, Winmerge and VS 22.

@khoji Like someone said in the thread, it's a hit and miss.Personally, I would look for a second-hand HP Zbook Studio G8 or G9. Or if you want to buy new, I can vouch for the Lenovo Legio 7 model, pro or not.The Zbook has separate RAM (not soldered) and even room for more than one ssd.

@zorangrbic I’ll check it out, the Lenovo Legion definitely looks attractive. Thanks.

@khoji I've used one for about five years now and my partner has had hers for three. I think they're solid devices, mine having hit the ground multiple times and still working like a champ. I do video editing, CG, Photoshop, games (1080p), programming. My only complaint is that mine does not have adequate cooling for adding an NVMe drive so I had to get a fan that sits underneath, and the internal one is very loud. My partner's laptop uses a more power-efficient CPU and has no problem.
