The term is wildly overused, but THIS is a heckler’s veto: the authorities imposing restrictions on speech based on anticipated hostile reactions to it.https://www.thefire.org/news/trinity-university-policy-burdens-events-history-or-potential-protests-or-disturbance

But this is just the latest in a long list of times I, like an old man yelling at a cloud, shake my fist at people refusing to accept that words mean things.

For instance, I will be in my cold, cold grave before I accept that literally means figuratively just because a lot of lazy careless fucks use it that way.

@Popehat This is where someone will point out that said mistake was recorded as early as 1563 or whatever, as if careless use of language were a new thing.

@Popehat and I am fairly certain only *some* anticipated reactions will be considered applicable

@Popehat I've worked on excising "biweekly" from my lexicon because thanks to the ambiguity of how to apply the prefix the word has literally come to mean both "twice a week" and "every other week."

@mansr @Popehat Well, actually, I know that to be not true. They did not have recording equipment in 1536.We have Edison to thank for that. 😉

@http_error_418 @Popehat That's almost comprehensible. What period does it represent?

@mtomczak @Popehat I'm going to start saying bifortnightly in place of weekly or monthly. That ought to keep people on their toes.

@mansr @Popehat I believe it's meant to emulate Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th Century English. It's from this classic Tumblr post discussing the same topic, and translates, roughly,"Shut your mouth! Both of these writers are witless knaves. English is being sullied by use of such newfangled speech."https://feather-of-maat.tumblr.com/post/148759847978/unreconstructedfangirl-todayiwrotenothing

@http_error_418 @Popehat That's more or less what I took it to mean. Modern German has the phrase "halt die Klappe" which you can probably infer the meaning of.

@mansr @Popehat (it's also awesome because it's roughly in keeping with the meter and rhyme of Chaucer's poetry - how's that for a riposte? Guybrush Threepwood got nothin' on this)

@http_error_418 @Popehat How accurate is it for Middle English? I only know modern languages. Well, whatever was modern in the 80s. Kids these days...

@mansr @Popehat I'm afraid that's beyond my knowledge to speak on... I think at least moderately accurate? But it's fully 20 years since the classes I did on Chaucer

@http_error_418 @Popehat I never did any such classes, so you still have the upper hand. It's obviously not important, I was merely curious.

@mansr @MsMissy @Popehat I always find that one odd, because its always been "couldn't care less" here (🏴) and the the alternative makes no sense.

@lemonflavoured @MsMissy @Popehat It's an abomination created and perpetuated by people who couldn't care less about the correct use of language.
