When the sculptor Pierre-Jean Davi d'Angers (1788-1856) visited Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836), he was shocked to find the composer of the Marseillaise infirm and living in poverty.Rouget de Lisle's dictated letters to his physician Émile Chapelain often describe his physical afflictions.
