My first ride in a robo-taxi! wild to see cars with no drivers all over San Francisco, but being in the back seat was actually normal-ish. It drives conservatively.

@brewsterkahle you are a braver person than I.If it loses the plot, its nest is a couple of blocks from Bottom of the Hill.

@brewsterkahle It makes me sad - my dad was a SF cab driver for over 50 years, told fabulous stories, told people where to go eat, never once had an accident. Uber/Lyft drove him out of business and the plummeting value of medallions lost him is retirement. This is now the next stage. Total de-personalization and loss of cultural history. :(

@brewsterkahle And then there was the Jamaican taxi driver I had in Boston in the late 90s who told me that in the morning he’d had a root canal and it hurt like hell, but then he smoke the ganja and everything be alright. He was actually a pretty good driver but the story…

Thanks for sharing that odd and very San Francisco video! Especially the empty car driving away at the end. I used to get bothered by cars in congested areas that only had one occupant (driving). Soon I will see cars on the roads with zero occupants!

Brad Templeton (writes about driverless cars) predicted the cost of a ride could go to $1/mile. This would mean it is much more affordable.Since this car topped out at 22mph, I wonder if we could use golfcart-like cars instead. They would look different, which could be useful in cities. https://enjoyorangecounty.com/street-legal-golf-carts/

@PawelK @brewsterkahle Fascinating! How much did you pay? Was it significantly cheaper than a regular taxi? I've had my own experiences with taxis lately. I can tell that a trip from Modlin to Chopin costs about 60 EUR. And from Wroclaw airport to the city center about 20 EUR. It could be a bit on the high end, but I do not feel it's completely unreasonable to be honest. I'd say that it's about 50% of the swedish equivalent, and about 30% more expensive than Lithuania.

@h4890 @brewsterkahle They estimate, it shall be achievable for a mile (i.e.1.6km) to cost at the range of $1 USD, as per this source:https://mastodon.archive.org/@brewsterkahle/110260080505864931Additionally, a human factor is a biggest cost booster pretty much anywhere in Europe (including CEE).If You provided a price per 1km for both rides, it would be easier for me to compare it vs market averages. If I was to guess, 20eur for a second one is close to what locals would pay on average.

@PawelK @brewsterkahle Yes, I asked in the office today, and they say that 20 EUR is about right from Wroclaw airport to city center. That ride was 10 km, so 2 EUR per km. As for the other one, that was 60 EUR for about 51 km, so 1.17 EUR per km. So apparently, better taxi prices in Warszaw! ;)

They are a scourge. We recently had a huge 4/20 event here in the Haight Ashbury. The stoned drivers and the robotaxis drove each other nuts, and the rest of us as well.

@m I read the linked article-- thank you.it sounds like a good idea to me to be able to hand control to remote humans if it encounters an "edge case." I would say a feature not a bug.what do you think?

@brewsterkahle As a passenger I would feel reassured to know that there was a human in the loop!But... you do find yourself wondering how often the human has to take over, and to what extent this is discernible to passengers. The Cruise Safety Report is very interesting and thoughtful, although it ducks these stats:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HkIpEScc9n1wtEEDCONe14pdPvKxYfzn/view

@h4890 @brewsterkahle I would guess for Warsaw bargain, drivers like longer routes, and those dont happen as often anymore as they used to, so if you go out of town price per mile flattens rather than inflate how it was in communist era and still is in state-mandated post-commie official pricelist. But its more or less uninformed guess.

@PawelK @brewsterkahle Another interesting phenomenon was airport security. Never have I met so grumpy and unfriendly people in security. They insisted to x-ray my watch and my belt, and I have travelled the world with my watch and my belt un-X-rayed. Very strange. Yet! I did not have to show any form of ID when travelling back, so it was very pleasurable not to have to show passport or ID all the time. No one cared about that. ;) A small + for a very cute girl in security at Wroclaw (...)

@PawelK @brewsterkahle airport who at least smiled and apologized saying "I'm sorry about the watch and belt, that's just stupid polish rules". A beautiful woman and a beautiful smile does make humiliating airport security a little bit more bearable. ;)

@h4890 @PawelK I did the minimal test, and it was about $9. Best $9 I have spent all year.

@h4890 @PawelK I read the average uber/lyft price is $2.50/mile. I find the minimum is more like $7 for any ride, and more like $9.
