Of course, a fundamental (and largely unspoken) problem with social media postings is that you could probably "vanish" 95% of them unseen, and hardly anyone would care or even notice.

@lauren Not sure why this is a problem, exactly. I’d guess (at least) 95% of spoken words in the world vanish instantly, and no one notices. Why do we think our postings are deserving of immortality?

@TruthSandwich That's because of the mirror you stare into all day.

@lauren That pretty much describes Mastodon’s algorithm in the Fediverse. Searches only find posts that are recent and that one’s follows or instance homies have posted or boosted. Huge amounts of traffic will never be seen except by a few … and that will be fairly random. But as long as the discussion proceeds briskly around a lot of interesting topics, most of us won’t care.

@lauren In my defense, if I were to stop, I would cease to exist.

@lauren I think this is also true of books, but it is not an argument against books.

@marsroverdriver The difference on Mastodon is that it gives the impression of reach that doesn't actually exist, and in what seems like a relatively random manner.

@lauren Many people might get the same impression from having their book published. :-)

@lauren To judge from the amount of interaction I get on my posts (few and far between as they may be) this sounds completely accurate.Unless I'm parking pictures of my cat. She gets (and deserves) attention.
