Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds. They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold. It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.#unity #responsibility #blackpride #minoritized #black

@Bam @thetitanborn Same. To be honest, I'm trying to do more than hope. I'm willing to be here while many parts of it are not yet great for Black users, and work with all the awesome folks that are making it better.♥️👍🏿I'm following in the footsteps of the Black Mastodon users that have been here for years, who started when it was much less welcoming than what I experienced, so that hopefully the Black folk that join after me, will have an even easier time than me.

@Bam @thetitanborn It's fascinating to see that about half of the replies to @thetitanborn 's post, are cringe-worthy forms of "I haven't seen any problems for Black users / your post is unnecessary / we don't see race here."So yeah... there's work to do.

@mekkaokereke @Bam @thetitanborn any specific things allies can do to help? My brain jumped to helping finance and support primarily black or BIPOC instances but I’m a bit sheltered/privileged and there’s bound to be a lot I’m missing.

@dave @Bam @thetitanborn 1) Don't ask Black users to CW discussions of their own racism.2) Don't be on a server where mods mistreat Black folk.3) Support the mods on your own server, financially and otherwise.4) Don't engage with sea lions that say "Mistreatment? Here? prove it!" There have been enough threads shared on Black folk receiving racism. Individually convincing each one is exhausting, and expecting that is a tactic of bad faith actors.

@thetitanborn How do we know people are black a bit black mainly white pinkish or bright red? We can't see one another on here.Surely that's the point. Insisting that there are different types of human being and they all need treating differently is called discrimination. Isn't that what we ought to be fighting, not encouraging?

@JustJaneFrom my understanding either such individuals blankly state that they are black in their bio or choose a profile picture where you can tell that they are black. What I don’t understand is why they don’t just block the bad actors. Of course it doesn’t solve the issue, but it might ease the transfer process. Especially if you are still proud of your identity.@thetitanborn

@juergen_hubertThat is also questionable, depending on the instance you are on, will give you the freedom to choose to block such instances or not. That is why block lists exist, so that any user can block such instances. The questionable part is does it make sense to block a whole instance if there are only a couple bad apples. And even the more extreme instances that are proponents of bad acting, should they be blocked from the get go?Since there’s little examples provided on which instance they were on and from which instances the attacks came and what action plans were taken, one can only speculate.Speculation:It seems like doing the work is the issue here. Lots of instances have the feature to hard block everyone. One just needs to set it up, since it’s not the default.Ignorance feels like another issue, which is acceptable when using a new service. Though getting fed up without asking for help and then leaving and complaining how bad the experience was, has little real value for future users. It feels like a safe haven tracking tool is something they wanted where every piece of content would be tracked and filtered out and/or destroyed if any mention of bigotry existed. Theoretically this is possible although quite complex, though it would go against the “no trackers” feature of mastodon. So in the end there are many options to combat such bad acting and each instance needs to choose what they think is right. And in the case that no perfect home exists, one can always host one’s own instance. There are services for that as well.@JustJane @thetitanborn

@barefootstacheJust wanted to add, after setting up an Akkoma instance of my own, that it's surprisingly cheap to host and surprisingly easy to set up.One recommendation is to not to use Mastodon if hosting a small or personal instance. In addition to being more difficult to set up, Akkoma has much less overhead.@juergen_hubert @JustJane @thetitanborn

@andy_twosticks @mekkaokereke @dave @thetitanborn How do you know there are Twitter trust and safety that aren’t? Or Facebook trust and safety that aren’t? Here you can pick an instance with admins you know or trust to do what is right. And if you can’t, you can create your own and mod it for yourself. There, you don’t have any of those options.

@Bam @mekkaokereke @dave @thetitanborn Well. Yeeeees. But. Technically that's an answer in the same way that "hide in a cave" is an answer to "how can I know who to trust?"I'm sure most mods on instances that are not obviously problematic are fine. I have in the past had one (1) interaction with a mod (not here) that was problematic. I'd ideally like Mastodon to make moderation more transparent to other instance users…

@andy_twosticks @mekkaokereke @dave @thetitanborn Then, there’s your answer. Start an instance that is. Mastodon is merely the platform. Individual instances set their own policies. If one doesn’t do what you like, you can create your own and implement whatever policy you like. And it isn’t hiding in a cave. You can federate your own instance with any other instance you choose that is willing to federate with you. That’s the beauty of decentralization.

@Bam @mekkaokereke @dave @thetitanborn Well, no. Not what I meant.I'd like *all* Mastodon users to have the option of seeing what their moderators are doing. I don't need to fix it for me, and fixing it just for me would solve nothing. Also: if I run my own instance, of course I know what the moderator is doing! He's me!

@Bam @andy_twosticks @mekkaokereke @thetitanborn it might be unrealistic to implement for Mastodon, but I kinda liked the way the forums at Something Awful had a user 'rap sheet' showing the history of suspensions and bans per user and the name of the moderator and their reason for taking action.

@mekkaokereke @dave @Bam @thetitanborn I very much appreciate your openness about the challenges here, and I want to do my part to build a community here consistent with my values. This includes not placing the burden of building and protecting the community on members of marginalized groups that are being mistreated. Are there ways as an end user (beyond reading the server rules) for me to evaluate the quality of moderation of an instance? I'm new and building my fediverse toolkit.

@lewriley @dave @Bam @thetitanborn The best way today, is to follow a bunch of Black users and see their experience. As I've pointed out this is very insufficient, as it means that many Black users experience N*zis first, then move to a better server.I've been online for many years, so I'm used to N*zis and their death threats. But for many Black users, this experience is jarring. Worse than the N*zis, is the "regular users."https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/109388611222845153

@lewriley @dave @Bam @thetitanborn An instance like mastodon.cloud can say that they don't tolerate N*zis in their "server rules."But the reality is, a Black user on that server can receive racist death threats complete with snuff images and video of Black folks and women being killed. Flagging for moderation did nothing. The Black person leaving that instance and warning other Black users to choose a better 1st server, gets the Black user blocked.🤡

@lewriley @dave @Bam @thetitanborn My issue is not with N*zis. Trash people and sociopaths will always exist. My issue is with the violence inherent in insufficient moderation coupled with a "use CW!" culture that denies the self reflection that would allow Mastodon users to realize that outside of 4ch*n, many Black users' *worst online experience ever*, was on Mastodon. If you don't follow Black users and listen to them, you would never know this.

@lewriley @dave @Bam @thetitanborn Right now, a bunch of white Mastodon users are thinking "Racist snuff images? OMG!!! I didn't know it was that bad! This is awful!"But a bunch of other white Mastodon users are thinking, "He really should have put mentions of (his own) death threats behind a Content Warning. And... he seems to have moved servers? So what's the problem? Why is he still saying bad things about his old server?"🙂🙃

@lewriley @dave @Bam @thetitanborn The paradox is: you only know about my experience and that of other Black users, because we refuse to play the little "Stepford Wives content warning game" when talking about what happened to us on this idyllic little platform. And you don't know how widespread the problem is, because of Mastodon design choices: crappy search, CWs, weaponized politeness, rejection of the very idea of screening servers for moderation.
