@kaia novelty shape discs are great, sometimes people stick them in slot loader cd players and they just slide in wrong and break the player lol

@kaia@brotka.st This feels like such a bad idea and probably completely destroys some specific types of CD drives.

@hj @kaia @Moon I've taken apart countess drives, they're made of cheap plastic and have super small thin fragile lines of copper and gold in there I wouldn't be surprised if they broke multiple components with an off set disk weight spinning at the rpms a cd reaches

@Soy_Magnus @kaia @Moon well, at the very least those are audio CDs I think and those are typically read at 1x speed, so it's not that bad, but still.a) vibrations still can damage the spindleb) drive might try to spin disk faster to pre-fetch the audio data for advanced features like faster track change or when cloning/ripping

@hj @kaia @Moon isn't there a possibility it could throw off the speed because of the offset weight causing malfunctions¿ I know that's an issue in manufacturing I'm not familiar with how much counterbalance features are put into disc readers

@hj @kaia @Soy_Magnus in practice most of these discs have bits that reach the outside edge of the disc spec so it is bound by the tray depression and doesn't have a problem. but also the weird shaped discs often have vertical balance problems because of the unusual shape.

@Soy_Magnus @kaia @hj @Moon If the people designing those odd-shaped disks had two brain cells to rub together, they would have done the center of gravity calculations and ensured it was right in the same place that a standard disk has its CoG so there is no vibration from spinning.Given these disks are old, it is more likely they did it correctly. I wouldn't trust such a stunt these days, because the task would be outsourced to a shop in China or India to save a few bucks because who gives a damn if it destroys other people's disk drives. That's actually good because they will have to spend more money and support the economy!

@kaia can a normal burner burn it?Yes, as long as you don’t burn over the edge. It’s just a smaller Mini CD. Since the track in a CD is a continuous spiral, the data only extends up to the edge that’s closest to the center, so for example the chips in your second picture don’t contain any data. Business card CDs can fit only tens of MB, see pic for the actual size of the burning area.what did you use it for?I don’t remember, I might have actually tried to burn a full-size image and ruined it lol

@Jazzy_Butts @kaia @fgaz to be "booting" would mean that there's data that could be used with no operating system on that computer. Most Linux distros are bootable. So are Windows installer discs.
