Don't help companies replace your coworkers with bullshit AI projects. It's greed and hype and you don't need to be a part of it. I walked away from a big tech job and so can you. There's plenty of companies just making a product that need your help

@friendlymike I hate to be the one to point this out but that tech job, any tech job, almost certainly produced a product that replaced someone.

@friendlymike Where does one draw the line between progress and said bullshit, though? Not being snarky. Legitimately asking.Sometimes legitimate progress has short-term pain/costs, but the long-term gains are better for everyone.

@benbloodworth I draw the line at ai for the sake of headlines and investor happiness. Dropbox stores files. They used to do it well. Now they just worry about endless growth to appease investors. No different than all the crypto and metaverse plays that fell apart.

@friendlymike I wasn't aware of the Dropbox news until you mentioned it. The cynical side of me feels like they used A.I. as an excuse to cover their other missteps. “We didn't lose sight of our core functionality and churn users because of it... we just needed to downsize because A.I. has made some employees redundant.”Of course that last sentence will unfortunately become true for many, but, in this case, it feels transparently hand-wavy.

@friendlymike @benbloodworth I draw the line at making fear the primary motivator. At that point where the tech that is going to replace humans is not even understood well. At the point where the companies that are ostensibly putting out the tech that will replace humans are doing so not because it solves a problem but because the competition got something out the door. I draw the line where the tech that's supposed to replace humans is shoved into places it doesn't belong.

@benbloodworth @friendlymike I'd call it harm instead of pain/costs and draw the line at "do no harm".
