I heard growing up that people say it and it's a slur, but I didn't believe it because stealing doesn't come naturally. Gypped or jewed on the other hand makes sense.

Yeah I don't think it was a real slur. There's no good slurs for Japanese people, jap doesn't sound bad. Chink and gook have a lot of weight to them.
