I am not as sure as many here that bluesky has no potential to become the "next Twitter". In the end it's about big names being on a platform and while some big names are using ActivityPub-based services a lot have fallen off of Mastodon et al. It's not a done deal and while technocrats always believe that open standards win, that hasn't reliably been the case.

@tante Even if it would be the NEXT twitter, i think there are enough people, that were upset enough by the first one, so they appreciate the difference.

@tante I'll be surprised if I'm very far off with https://flameeyes.blog/2022/11/09/a-lukewarm-take-on-mastodon/ still.

@tante on the other hand, big names joined twitter when it already was a thing. So maybe there will be a next thing, maybe no platform will be able to to gain this power and we all end up sticking in bubbles and receive relevant news from reddit š

@tante āwinningā implies that there even should be a singular space where everyone ends up at. Which also has never been the case (Facebook came close but even with their massive capital and influence, ultimately failed at this).Itās also counter to human social structures in the fist place. Itās incredibly unlikely that there is a sweet spot that attracts even just a simple majority let alone enough to make other places infeasible. The volunteer-run Fediverse doesnāt need to āwinā, while capital driven services kind of do to pay off on their investment.

Like I love FLOSS and standards as much as the next person (maybe more, I run Linux even on my laptop) but FLOSS-adjacent communities overestimate the relevance of "sovereignty" and standards as drivers significantly. In the end the thing with the best iPhone support will will because especially in the US that's the default platform for digital folks and they are very comfortably locked in their Apple-controlled ecosystem.

@esther "winning" isn't meant in the economic sense. It's about being culturally relevant and that is absolutely what many people in the fediverse want.

@tante it is most certainly too early to tell. Sure, it's getting a lot of hype, but if it can't maintain momentum it won't go anywhere. They haven't figured out blocking, so at this point they're in a race against the clock to get basic safety features in place before people are driven off the platform.

@tante I think economic and (at least mainstream) cultural relevance are more closely related and thereās definitely a significant portion of the fediverse thats completely fine with being somewhat niche. What I see for the future is a continuing come-and-go of VC funded platforms while the fediverse exists in parallel to that with people coming when the next ābig thingā collapses (as they all do) and leave to join the next. A substantial enough population though will stick around.

@fancysandwiches I'm not saying that they are technically better (or even trustworthy: How can one release a thing without blocking to the public? It's dangerous), I just think that when push comes to shove those things matter less than whatever a few big names use.

@tante If anything, Mastodon is another indicator to me that the FLOSS model of "sovereignty" is just more hyperindividualistic nonsense. Nobody cares about that except nerds who enjoy playing with servers for fun. I've been that person, and while it can be fun, I can admit that particular personal quality doesn't necessarily make a person suited to running a social network. Musk is just the most extreme example who can't admit it...

@tante yeah I think your assessment is spot on. People are going to follow the big names wherever they go, it's not going to be about what choice has the best features or best team of founders. It could indirectly come down to technical details, if for example the big names were chased off of a platform because it lacks fundamental safety features.

@tante Isnāt a non-negligible risk that funding will be pulled, given how things are going at Twitter? https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/29/23428241/elon-musk-twitter-bluesky-decentralized-social-networking-future

@tante This is a good point Jaron Lanier made in his books about the design of the iPhone vs Linux. Feels true for Mastodon too.

@tante @mspro The very idea of āthere has to be a winner and the rest go bustā is poison. There is Coke and Pepsi and Liba and Fritz and, and, and. And that is just the niche of carbonated, colored water.šš»āāļø
