In a few days a longer interview with me is going to be published about "AI" and luddism. It's a weird sensation to be in the spotlight as a person so much "Interview with" vs. "article about Y".

(Also it sucks that the German translation for Luddite is so tainted/misleading [interview is in German])

@tante isn't it also in English? Or is there a significant difference that I'm missing?

@esther it's also used pejoratively but it's not as limited to one specific violent action as "Maschinenstürmer".

@tante Indeed, pretty misleading. I had to look the word Luddite (Maschinenstürmer) up some time ago to get a broader, better understanding 🙄I look forward to the interview!

@tante @esther Was there an equivalent movement resisting exploitative automation in Germany at the time?

@KevinMarks @esther Germans defining characteristic is that when confronted with the choice between absolute evil and disorder they will never choose disorder.Which is a long winded way of saying: No, not that I know of.

@tante Tja, Captain Ludd war in Deutschland ein Unbekannter. Marx und Engels sprachen übrigens korrekter von "Maschinenzertrümmerern".

@tante Isn't storming workshops and destroying the machines that were taking their jobs what Luddites where all about?I get that in the to today's equivalent people will probably not be trying to destroy the computers training the LLMs and diffusion models, but I seem to be missing something else of what you're talking about 🤔 @esther

@c3manu @esther No, the smashing of looms was an action but not the goal. The goal was to defend their quality of life, defend the conditions and quality of their work, to put a stop to increasing exploitation and to act - as a community - against the growing power monopoly of the capitalist owners of the shops.Had the machines brought them for example better working conditions no loom would have been harmed.
