Some EV Car facts (via expert on talk radio)Across the whole USA there's only 130,000 charging stations. That's 1 per 10,000 cars. In California it's 2.8 stations per 10,000 cars. For home charging, 30% of USA homes do NOT have a garage.Buying a level 2 charging station (like to add to a gas station) costs a million dollars. It's not recommended to sit in the car when using a fast charger because of the intense magnetic fields.@adam @Johncdvorak

@Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak Across the United States, there are roughly 350,000 designated parking spaces to serve the roughly 2.25 million trucks that shut down for their mandated 10 hour break every night. Mandate that all trucks be electric and you'd have to, fairly instantaneously, build 2 million spaces and build a charger for every new and existing space. That's 235 billion just for the chargers, what would it cost for the spaces, installation and infrastructure?

@adam @Johncdvorak Regarding the EV tax creditYou get $3750 if the vehicle is built in the USA.You get another $3750 if 40% of the battery materials are built in the USA in 2023For 2024 it goes to 50% , increasing annually until by 2027 its 90% to qualify. Only 20 Vehicle models qualify today. If it costs more than $80,000 it's out. If you make more than $200k each or $400k as a couple, you don't get it.

@Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak After all, why save the world or stimulate the economy MORE by encouraging the wealthy to go electric?(just applying empty green-headed 'logic' - I think EVs will ultimately do more harm than good.)

@Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak not to mention multilevel parking lots ...many of them cannot sustain the extra load that electric cars contain due to their heavy batteries..there's nothing good about EVs

@Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak one correction. Level 3 chargers are the high output dc chargers. The level 2 are the home, permanent chargers. Not a million dollars. They are generally under $1k.

@Muppet1856 @Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak you also donโt need a garage to have a Level 2 charger at home. You probably do need a driveway, which city dwellers donโt always have.

@Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak it cost me about $100 to install level 2 charging at home. A million seems high. Admittedly if you ask an electrician to do it they charge about $1500 as soon as you explain it's for an EV, but that's still a fraction of the price mentioned. For what it's worth

@Redna @Klaatu @adam @Johncdvorak Looks like level two is two-phase which garages may or may not have. Since it's not unusual for driers to be in that area it's probably not *too* unusual, but yeah if a line has to be run the materials by themselves are rather crazy. Even barring that though, I worked someplace that had to put in a 3-phase transformer and I think it was like $50,000, so even if a house didn't have 2-phase (doubtful, even my old mobile home had two-phase)) a full setup isn't going to be anywhere in the neighborhood of $1,000,000.

@EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak @Klaatu @Redna Around here I have never seen a house without 2-phase and most garages have a dryer plug and in most cases the electrical panel is mounted on the outside of the garage. Anything within the last 30 years also has a 200amp panel. So for most people it should be quite trivial.

@mycal @EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak @Klaatu yeah, cost was materials. Depends where you live & how far you run, but some copper, breaker, and the outlet is at most a few hundred. I did electrical work in my youth, so between that & YouTube, it was easy to do on my own. Electric bill went up 10-20 dollars a month, which was better than the 80+ in gas I was spending. That was pre Bide-inflation so easily saving 100+ a month now. House over 20 yrs old & the panel manages it with ease.

@EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak @Redna well can you charge that car up in 5 minutes at your house? I think the expert was talking about Level 2 of the Fast Superchargers at an industrial size (by your measure level four or greater as a charger class) to make gas stations EV compliant where it take the same amount of time to charge up an EV as it would to fuel an ICE, which'll be necessary if Biden is going to force everyone to smoothly convert. Stations fuel 8 to 16 cars at a time as is.

@Klaatu @EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak ๐๐๐๐๐ No. ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ And no existing charger I've ever seen, no matter the price, charges a car in 5 minutes. Biden doesn't give an F about the ramifications, none of that is necessary for him. You think he wants anything smooth or rational? His will be done, screw you're freedoms.

@Redna @EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak true Biden's there to destroy the country so they can build back better their communist Utopia. However last month there was a paper on a new battery formula in the lab that could be charged in 10 minutes. Also super capacitors can be charged or discharged much quicker already. There's also a joint proposal out for a new standard supercharger cable in anticipation of being able to dump a full carload of current in 10 minutes. That's the goal.

@Klaatu @EvilSandmich @adam @Johncdvorak which is literally double 5 minutes. I've been seeing proposals and ideas for ages. The much more real destructive impact on environment from manufacturing EVs vs ICE can't be over come, and the energy density is still a real problem. I just like the torque of my car, and 20 minute charging doesn't bother me when I'm not at home.
