When Rome sent their first scouts to your village you didn't consider that an honor of recognition of your tribe's achievements. You trained your tribe's people, produced weapons and prepared to defend yourself, because it wouldn't be long until they send their first armies to your village. Meta is Rome.#fediverse

@dictvm What do you think about the idea of creating a certification body, whose logo can be displayed by fediverse software/ servers that meet or surpass a set of minimum criteria for user respect? Kind of like the entities that certify organic products. Getting certified would come with an annual fee, which could provide a steady income for a fediverse oversight body, advocating for the interests of ordinary people using the network. Also interested in @smallcircles 's take on this idea.

@strypey @dictvm I've seen various takes on this been discussed before. There may be a range of aspects to objectively gauge quality of service with, which may include human rights alignment but also more subjective socio-cultural aspects that we value around the Fediverse. If you really want to safeguard those, then it becomes more complex. You'd have to visit hosts to be able to offer more guarantees. That can be a paid service. Also a crowdsourced social review/rating service is an option.

@strypey @smallcircles I have a few questions: How should that institution arrive at a consensus on what is "user respect"? Just things like "don't sell my/aggregated data, keep backups" or is this aimed more towards content moderation, blocking and defederation?

Implementation questions, awesome!@dictvmHow should that institution arrive at a consensusThe same way we arrived at a consensus on the criteria for software freedom (which I would argue is necessary but not sufficient for user respect). Specifically, I'd suggest a period of open-ended discussion in a dedicated space, a drafting process with several iterations of feedback, and a realtime conference to tweak and accept a 1.0 version for production use. Rinse, repeat. @smallcircles

@dictvm> Just things like "don't sell my/aggregated data, keep backups" or is this aimed more towards content moderation, blocking and defederation?I would start by listing all the ways the DataFarms violate the human rights and civil liberties of the people using them, giving us a list of Thou Shalt Nots. Then restate them in a positive form, as a list of Thou Shalts. I'm happy to lay out my criteria as a starting point for discussion, how much detail are you interested in?@smallcircles

@Strypey Smells like censorship. A system like this can always be abused by the wrong people.

@jrp> Smells like censorshipThen you need to check your sense of smell ;) > A system like this can always be abused by the wrong people Oh don't worry, we'd definitely make sure only the right people can abuse it :P

@strypeymaybe 1-2 examples to provide an idea of what you're thinking about might help. Appreciate the thought you're putting into this! @smallcircles

@dictvm> maybe 1-2 examples to provide an idea of what you're thinking aboutI'd start with the Four Freedoms for software:https://fsfe.org/freesoftware/... and add some stuff from the Franklin St Statement:https://web.archive.org/web/20090124084811/http://autonomo.us/2008/07/franklin-street-statement/Some of the stuff in the Mastodon Server Covenant too. Plus I'd have a look through the FNF's network freedoms for anything relevant:https://web.archive.org/web/20111128010037/http://freenetworkfoundation.org/?page_id=254@smallcircles
