@BasedLord @VBurner @Dr_Barlos it wasn't his call to make. he was excited to work together and eager to start but they went a different route. I honestly think it's because these providers like google firebase and CloudFlare stream don't charge upfront. I don't think he has the money to put up upfront and that's why they went this route. there's really no other reason to willingly pay dozens of times more money for the same experience. not my issue and I don't care much as I just wanted to help but it's pretty dumb

Someone correct me where I’m wrong: Sam Hyde created a lolcow web series called fishtank full of a bunch of weirdos in a house together ala Big Brother? Sam asked Graf for help with scaling video providers and his backers balked at the $10k upfront payment, even though paying per viewer would be infinitely more as they scaled viewership.

@Dr_Barlos @graf I just don’t see any way of them going off-google/cloudflare/corporate for their infrastructure. Sam’s been inundated with alt-tech proposals for years, he’s got a huge amount of resistance built up so no matter how hard you sell him on why a non-corporate system would work better and cheaper he’ll ignore it. Can’t totally blame him, when you have this much attention, you just want something that will 100% work with no more downtime, and it’s hard to trust small time hodgepodge solutions without a serious track record. If he’s smart (he’s only moderately smart, but internet-poisoned which blinds him) then he’d diversify and do a smaller peertube instance w/ graph as a “test case” to help divert some load, and as it gets stress tested he can monkeybranch the feed over to that one.

@Oozeman @Dr_Barlos Yeah, this is all easily explained by the fact that he’s an artist who’s never held down a professional job. Work with any of the creator class like him and these same ouvres rise to the surface every damn time. I do think there’s a cycle - hyde’s audience doesn’t pay enough for him to keep reliable professionals on retainer, which means the final product he delivers doesn’t make as much money, and the cycle continues. The site is actually very nice, when you consider how inexperienced the guys are making it. It managed to stay up for a day or two….pretty good for a first-timer. If you think this is bad, imagine how bad their bookkeeping is. Probably a total nightmare. Probably another shoddy LLC, too. Ugh.
