Anyone got any recommendations for a low cost laptop for travel? I'm looking for the most reliable thing I can find under about 400$ US.

@SpaceElf Any cheap old thinkpad (T420-T480) will do, especially since you can change their batteries on the fly. Though they are ugly, heavy, and bulky, which might be a concern.

@dodo Thanks for the recommendation!Bulk is fine, I just want something as reliable as possible, but that isn't going to be a fiscal annoyance if it breaks. Am I able to get a bulk battery charger for the thinkpads? Or do they need to be in the machine to charge?

@SpaceElf You can get a external battery charger (around 50$ if new, generation specific), though I am not sure if bulk battery chargers exist. I personally used a T440 with 9-cell batteries when I went out hiking, and it had around 6-8 hours of battery in active use. Together with its charging cable and the spare battery that's like 3 kilograms of weight.

@dodo Weights not a big deal for me, I'm planning on circumnavigating Australia along its coasts in a van.

For each battery, of course. The entire set which I got second-hand didn't cost me more than 220$ US so I was pretty reckless with it too. But the second-hand prices can be insane because of NERDS who purchase like 10 of them, so your experience might wary.

@SpaceElf And if able, get one with a upgraded screen for 2 reasons.1.) Default screen quality is atrocious when sunrays directly hit the screen.2.) If its upgraded it usually meant that its previous owner took a great deal of care into it. They're also more open to haggling.

@SpaceElf I'm going to recommend the same as what the other poster did. You get your money's worth from refurbished laptops than new ones. Some old business HP laptops and ThinkPads are cheap and reliable.
