is there an unofficial #matrix client app out there that offers the exact same features and functionality as the official apps (e.g. Element)?

@oros Not really... it's "based on Element", so it's basically the official client with some stuff added to it.

@craftyguy You didn't specify that you don't want a fork. You could try fluffy but it doesn't have the same functionality as Element.

@oros Right... I want to know if there's any non-official Matrix client that implements everything that the official, reference client (Element) implements. Forks don't count, because functionality is still provided by the official client implementation...

@craftyguy Sadly, no. Most will probably not need _everything_ Element does though and can be content with what the unofficial clients _do_ support.

@craftyguy Nheko is pretty close and it is native, which is to say it isn't just a web client in a wrapper.

@craftyguy No. There is also no reason to implement a client like that. There are plenty of clients that have some features Element doesn't have, but often the miss some other features then. You should probably rather look for a client that has the features you want instead of being an Element copy or you stick with Element.

@craftyguy @oros Element is not the reference client and it doesn't implement everything in the official spec. For example it does not support tags, pinned messages (well, it is behind labs), knocking on rooms and a few other things from the spec.

@craftyguy Matrix clients often have very different goals and I don't think Element even implements all features so you have to look for one with the stuff you need/like. I think Nheko implements a lot of stuff and like Element it works kind of similar to Discord and Telegram but I prefer Fluffychat which looks a lot more like a traditional messenger app.

@gamey thank you for this perspective. Here I was, thinking that it was sad/disappointing that the official #matrix apps were the only apps that were the closest to implementing the spec.I've tried many of the ones you and others have listed here, with mixed results. In many cases (at the time) E2EE, verification, spaces, and so on are broken or missing...But I guess you could be right that not all of them would want to in the first place. So maybe they just do a bad job advertising that?

@craftyguy Well, you definitely aren't wrong about the bugs and missing features. I actually started to use Fluffychat because Element on my phone was close to unusable and the situation isn't much better with most other clients ether. I do think the situation improved a lot since I started to use Matrix (Riot) and will probably continue to do so looking at the rising popularity and funding but it's far from perfect rn.

@craftyguy As a huge #kde and #plasmamobile fan I can recommend #neochat. I don't know if it has all the features that element has but it has everything that you need to communicate in matrix(at least on a basic level).

@ManuelBoe yeah I've been using #neochat on my phone for the last few months, and it's pretty good. The problems I have with it sometimes are likely to be from running it on the GNOME stack than anything else 😅

@craftyguy @gamey Try Nheko, it supports E2EE and verification. Spaces support is definitely lackluster (TBH, I find spaces to be a bit confusing in Element, too), but I am positive it's being worked on.

@craftyguy @gamey Both Nheko amd Fluffychat have working E2E and Spaces. Nheko also has working threads (on desktop, tye threads menu doesn't show up on mobile).I haven't used Element in nearly a year. Now I don't know if either one has video calling. I use a OnePlus 6 so I don't have working cameras.
