Meta’s ActivityPub-enabled Twitter competitor is moving ahead. The project is called “Barcelona”.It will be its own independent app, and it’s being pitched as “Instagram for your thoughts”. How do you feel about Meta joining the Fediverse? Here’s a screenshot of Barcelona. https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/metas-twitter-alternative-barcelona-is-taking-shape/648482/@fediversenews

For nearly 20 years, Meta has proven time and time again that they care nothing for the open web. And should they use the open web, it’s for sucking up as much personal data as they can. So I’m not excited about Meta joining the Fediverse, and I’m skeptical.

That said, should Meta actually federate with Barcelona, it should be seen as a victory of sorts. It means the biggest social media company in the world validated the notion of a Fediverse. I’ll probably block Barcelona. You probably should too. Meta probably won’t be a good citizen. Nevertheless, adoption of decentralized social media will soon be in full swing.

I suspect there’s a political component for why Meta is using ActivityPub for Barcelona. Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t like Elon Musk, and I don’t think he likes Jack Dorsey either. So that probably means that AT protocol is a no go for him.

Based on screenshots of Barcelona, it won’t be a good citizen on the Fediverse—I don’t like it one bit. Do you think “insights” and “your activity” will be private? If you think so, I have a bridge to sell you!Meta will be sucking up that data because that’s what they do. They’re surveillance capitalists through and through.

@retiolus @atomicpoet I don't think it was announced, but rather speculated on. In March there were a series of posts in news channels that hinted at it. A Quick search gave this one: https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/startup/meta-mulls-a-twitter-competitor-codenamed-p92-that-will-be-interoperable-with-mastodon-10223961.html

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I'm new to this and a bit confused – when a company like Meta says they are joining the fediverse, does that mean that they would make a server that can interact with other Mastodon servers? I'm thinking not, but then how is it decentralised if it's its own walled garden?

@HystericalDame Yes, the idea is that Barcelona will (allegedly) support ActivityPub which means that it will be able to connect to Mastodon. It will not, however, be Mastodon itself. Not everything in the Fediverse is Mastodon. For example, I myself am on something called Hubzilla which is four years older than Mastodon, and yet, I'm able to communicate with you.ActivityPub support does not mean that Barcelona all in itself will be decentralised. It will rather mean that Meta wants to create a monolithic, corporate-owned, centralised silo which will nonetheless be able to connect to Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse. Mind you, Tumblr is working on ActivityPub support, too.Zuckerberg's plan is obviously to troll Elon Musk by drawing people away from Twitter and into the Fediverse without the hassle of dealing with instances and projects and whatnot, instead giving them the closest thing to "literally Twitter without Musk" the Fediverse could possibly offer. Still, Barcelona users will be able to interact with everyone on Mastodon and in the rest of the Fediverse (except for those instances that will block any access from and to Barcelona, that is).

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Not 100% sure why so many people here are annoyed. They can just defed meta like they already do to the rest of the fediverse.

@Shredder @atomicpoet @fediversenews apple's ichat, google's google talk and meta's facebook messenger all used to support XMPP, an open messaging protocol, back in the late 2000s, around 2010 or so, they all dropped support for XMPP, taking their previously federated messaging services centralised

@EvilSandmich @HystericalDame @Chris Trottier With the difference that Gab started out as a legitimate Mastodon instance (it was Truth Social that broke the license) whereas Barcelona seems to be being designed as a proprietary, non-free, closed-source system from the ground up.If it really was closer to Gab, i.e. not only using ActivityPub as a protocol, but actually being based on Mastodon itself, judging from the other comments in this thread, I'd predict for it a history similar to that of Identi.ca: It started out as the biggest StatusNet instance of all, actually the only one that was half-way well-known, but still federated with all the other ones. Then it abandoned StatusNet and switched to Pump.io as its backend, thereby defederating from the rest of the StatusNet network. Ironically, I think it didn't live much longer than that.
