What’s the worst things about Mastodon for you?For me, the technology is good but I’m not a massive fan of the community culture at times. Eg the nanny state thing, where people get piled on to add content warnings to posts for a list of criteria that differs per person, and wind direction. I also don’t think the site is welcoming to newbies, that kinda thing comes across as snobbish. Also, I know y’all run Linux: please stop telling me 🤣

@GossiTheDog yeah, #mastadon does seem overly weighted towards “I only want my version of free speech, and a safe space” which is totally cool! I think that’s what private instances and communities are for. People on Mastadon do seem pretty fragile and prone to rage-quit-blocking more so than other platforms that are better for actual discourse.

@taci7C0ff33 Another one - over reporting. I run a Mastodon instance. I’ve had no Nazis or anything like that. Have I had loads of user reports? Yes. What have most of them been about? Other users trying to get other users banned, for differences of opinion. Eg somebody asked about if authors should sell their books on Amazon, so people tried mass reporting them, to get them banned, as they said it threatened authors livelihoods. 🤣

@GossiTheDog not much, to be honest. Maybe sort of poor visibility across instances. An example is when you go to a obvious reply to a toot and you cannot see the initial post? Apart of that it has been great and it has that vibe of early 90s IRC, which I really enjoy…🤷🏻‍♂️

@ssamulczyk @GossiTheDog The "I can't see the initial post thing" is infuriating. I wish I could at least see who the reply is responding too so I know what server to look at for the original post.

@DuncanWatson Yes! The only explanation I can imagine is my instance is blocking the instance of the initial poster… Also, my previous instance has been a snowflake hell, blocking literally every server without a reasonable (or even providing) cause, so I had to migrate the account…🥸 @GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog I hate the idea that things I've contributed to the Mastodon fediverse get split up across instances if I ever move out of infosec.exchange to another community I feel I vibe more with. "Account portability" here means you can bring your followers list along to a new instance, but all your existing content gets left behind on the old instance. This aspect plays out horribly in my head whenever I consider migrating:"Now where did I post that again?" And then I waste a bunch of time searching multiple instances 🙃

@iamkaleMastodon software specifically is being designed as micro-blogging platform, and you will be unavoidably paternalised about it the moment you say “but why can’t I write more than 500 chara…” The whole platform seems to be designed for just-in-time delivery of messages whose life-time is maybe a day. And that’s one reason why I don’t run Mastodon but Pleroma, but also run another instance on Plume, and also have account on Write.as, both of which are designed for publishing long texts. @GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog We should probably rewrite it in Rust
