"What if Google starts their own Google-branded Fediverse instance?"They already did.Google Buzz used OStatus as part of its protocol stack. OStatus later evolved into ActivityPub.As for Google Buzz? Like most Google social media projects, it died -- later to be replaced by Google+.@fediversenews

Here's an old video of @chrismessina speaking at Google I/O in 2010.He's discussing the technical underpinnings of Google Buzz.So much of what he talked about later became very impactful in ActivityPub. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5rf-JlV8dw

By the way, some of the Fediverse still uses OStatus. In particular, Friendica and GNU Social. Thus, even though ActivityPub is here, OStatus has never gone away.

It's fascinating how people still ask, "What if Google did to ActivityPub what they did to XMPP with GoogleTalk?"But in fact they already did they opposite with ActivityPub.They were an early adopter of the Fediverse, helped develop its early technology, abandoned it -- where it was left for dead. And now it's been resuscitated by community advocates.Google did a "reverse XMPP" with the Fediverse 😆

I guess the lesson here is that it's not so bad when Google abandons social media technology. The Fediverse had to spend 10 years in the desert before it would re-emerge as a true community-owned competitor to Big Social.

@alienghic @joinjabber Yeah, and have you seen mov.im? That's federated social networking using XMPP.
