Why is https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3438/jiggle/ not core gnome-shell functionality

@mjg59 thank you that looks great! Not sure how I missed seeing this extension before!

@mjg59 because the core tenant of Gnome's UX team seems to be "Fuck users, amirite?"

@mjg59 Might be something that we can get in there as part of a11y initiatives....

@mattdm @mjg59 don't know whether I like seeing two timers for every 10 ms in JS to fill a position history FIFO, which then gets put through the gamma function (I bet there's a good reason for a gamma function, but, also, wat.), Every time completely although only one element is added, and summed up, to decide whether a cursor shake happened. In JavaScript, that is critical to the responsiveness of my system.

@funkylab @mattdm I'm going to make no arguments about whether the implementation is good, I just want the functionality!

@mjg59 @mattdm absolutely! I'm not a reasonably good JS dev myself (I do signal processing, which is why I immediately dove into that to see how it achieves the feature), so my code reviews wouldn't be productive, but I do think the feature is cool, and with actual language know how and a bit of review, this world be super cool It's just that I'm very hesitant about upstreaming code that looks logically suspicious.

@mjg59 genuine question, how is it better than the integrated a11y setting to highlight the cursor when tapping CTRL?

@mjg59 Likely because we're still using the "press Left Control to locate the pointer" option in the accessibility settings; the wobble would be a nice addition, though, and it would probably be easier to implement in the shell. Make sure to open an issue!

@mjg59 I saw this and immediately searched for "jiggle plasma". I'm not sure what I thought I was going to find with that search.

@mjg59 @mia low key one of my favourite features, especially as a multi-monitor kind of guy who frequently loses track of which display the pointer's on, never mind where on that display it is.

@projectgus @mjg59 there's an inbuilt option called Track Mouse in Desktop Effects which has a similar function making it easy to locate the cursor.

@justinz @mjg59 Thanks! I did find this and tried turning it on.Similar to the default Gnome one, I'm not sure in the moment I'll remember to go to my keyboard and press Meta+Ctrl (or whatever other key combination is configured), but maybe I will.Jiggling the mouse is already my go-to when I lose the mouse pointer, so augmenting that process seems naturally lower friction.(I had been thinking of trying to do some KDE development, so maybe trying to implement a mouse trigger for Track Mouse is a good place to start...)

@mjg59 oh nice, we were talking about this somewhat recently on a design call; I didn't realize there was an extension. There's also the "tap Ctrl to locate pointer" thing in accessibility settings but this macOS-like behavior might be more discoverable.

@mjg59 You can ask that for basically all basic desktop features that arenโ€™t included in Gnome and require extensions in order to be used

@mjg59 I was looking for something like this a couple years back, so glad to see it finally exists. ๐Ÿ˜Š Although I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Apple had a patent on it or something. ๐Ÿ˜’
