Linus stuck this on YouTube yesterday and failed to mention that it basically just disables a bunch of security features and OS updates in return for more free RAM. Cool.

@zak There was a oh so brief "oh btw this disables some security things" text flash up on the screen which I feel is ridiculously insufficient disclosure

@kevinmirsky @zak dude, if your nutts itch just go bottomless, it's so easy, no need to wash if they get washed by the spring breeze. "but libus then someone can slap your sack" puh leez, no one but criminals and sexpests would ever do that!

@thegpfury From what I could tell in his video, it was somewhat noticeable. But there are better solutions to that problem. This is not the way.

@zak For sure. Seems like there are other things to mess with. Not sure that I'd expect LTT to be the beacon of good security advice based on their track record.

@zak Jesus Christ. These are usually the only defenses consumers have. This is straight up malicious."Atlas gets rid of the following services and features:☑️ Windows Defender☑️ Restore Points and System Reset"https://docs.atlasos.net/troubleshooting/removed-features/

@kurtsh It also disables Spectre/Meltdown mitigations, as far as I’m aware. Just a whole lot of nastiness.

@zak it's safe to say that the only people who are capable of using something like this safely are ones that could do it themselves.

@lewdthewides @MischievousuTomatosu @zak That's the rational answer but the kinds of lemmings who fall for snake oil like this deserve everything coming to them.

@MischievousuTomatosu @lewdthewides @zak Yeah, I intentionally bought my hardware when I did because I wanted a machine I *knew* was going to work with LTSC without problems, and that generation of AMD hardware was basically the last one I could get away with.

@MischievousuTomatosu @lewdthewides @zak I have certain outstanding reasons to care about Windows compatibility still (namely if EXA rips come out) but for the most part I'm in the same boat as you, especially now that a lot of the outstanding issues I had with current year Linux have recently been fixed.

@pernia @MischievousuTomatosu @lewdthewides @zak @graf @graf something to keep in mind if and when I bother keeping a windows install around again (for now, there's no point because no public exa rips and knowing shou there probably won't be any this century)

@pernia @MischievousuTomatosu @lewdthewides @zak @graf @graf https://exa.ac/en/ extortion racket disguised as an arcade game company, "rip" in this case would be bootlegged pc releases (just like with any other pc-based arcade hardware)
