I have probably saved $20k on automotive even when you account for my generous tool purchases; more still if you consider that it helps your ability to buy used cars.RT: https://poa.st/objects/816d7cae-0563-4394-be85-54ce5ecb291b

@sickburnbro Im not a master mechanic by any stretch of the imagination ,but I learned to do the most basic of mechanical maintenance on my vehicles since I got my first car like changing brakes and oil for example and I have definitely saved myself alot of money over the years .

@troubledturtle Yeah. For a lot of vehicles, changing spark plugs will be 500-1000 because of modern designs which hide rear plugs behind intake manifolds and thus necessitate a few hours to play legos. You can buy OE exact plugs on something like rockauto for like 1/10th of the cost. You could literally need to buy a full set of wrenchs + torque wrench + lights and still win out on that one.

@sickburnbro @troubledturtle Both my current cars have 4 cylinders and the plugs at the very top of the head, between the cams. Very easy to change. The hardest part was zip tying the wiring back to the coils because I broke all 4 clips, and that took a couple minutes.

@NitroDubs @sickburnbro I recently replaced the spark plugs and one ignition coil pack and air filter in a 2018 Ford Focus talk about a pain in the ass , hardest thing was getting the air filter back into the box and getting the screws lined back up . I had to walk away from the car for 30 minutes ,I was that frustrated with it.

@troubledturtle @AjaxTheUnderkin @NitroDubs as I've mentioned a lot of times, a lot of frustration in life happens from misaligned expectations. In the engine bays of a lot of the modern compact cars you need to have a plan of attack that often means removing stuff to get to your target stuff

@AjaxTheUnderkin @troubledturtle @NitroDubs @sickburnbro If you buy one make sure it has an engine without the rubber oil pump belt which can disintegrate and then clog the oil sump, permanently destroying the engine with zero warning. Knew someone who had this happen despite perfect maintenance. Fortunately it was barely inside warranty and got the whole engine replaced with one that has an oil pump chain. Award winning ecoboost engine.

@ProfessionalNEET @AjaxTheUnderkin @NitroDubs @sickburnbro @troubledturtle imagine designing an engine with a belt driving such a critical component so a worn or broken belt kills the engine. idiotic

@meowski @ProfessionalNEET @AjaxTheUnderkin @NitroDubs @troubledturtle my best guess is something like "we can drive this electrically to help fuel milage by using a more powerful motor but only running it at a low duty cycle"

@sickburnbro @AjaxTheUnderkin @troubledturtle @NitroDubs The oil pump belt is within the engine and made out of rubber. It is then partially dissolved by the oil its bathed in and then disintegrates into pieces which clog the sump and starves the engine of oil which destroys it. Just recalled the belt disintegration had something to do with breakdown of oil changing its chemical properties so that it dissolves the belt. That means its very important to only use the exact specified oil and to get it changed more frequently than normal with other cars. Ford ended up reducing their recommended oil change mileage drastically because the belts would just up and disintegrate regardless of their recommendations and I was told they ended up switching to chains in the end.

@ProfessionalNEET @AjaxTheUnderkin @troubledturtle @NitroDubs chains or a direct link to the crankshaft is usually how it is done, and with good reason; can't really run a 4 cycle without generous lubrication.

@ProfessionalNEET @AjaxTheUnderkin @troubledturtle @NitroDubs a good chain is probably going to be more like $5-10 even in volume, but historically auto companies have been loathe to chain stuff that isn't broken for just these reasons

@ProfessionalNEET @AjaxTheUnderkin @NitroDubs @sickburnbro @troubledturtle this is the actual reason, also just general dumbass engineering. it shoukmld be connected to the crankshaft like honda engines that routinely run for 300k milesoil pump belt chain etc you guys are killing me
