Do any of you understand how this endangers vulnerable people who have moved to the Fediverse so that police, etc, can't buy their information from Google? Or have their details used for AI training? JFC. Selfish arseholes.

Nevermind that it should only ever be opt-in. I have explicitly opted out.

@CrazyMyraI don't understand search here at all. To me, it should be much more like setting up a WordPress site than a private forum. It's crawled unless the owner indicates they don't want it to be. I don't need an account to see most posts from a browser. But then for everyone to complain about a lack of full search (a sentiment I share) when there clearly is some search beyond hashtags is just so confusing.

@wjmaggos From a personal perspective - which I'd recommend to people concerned about safety - I don't want my content available, particularly not on surveillance capitalism sites like Google. It should be opt-in as a default. But it's opt-out.I have opted out, and the apps and servers doing this ignore my wishes.I'm lucky enough not to have any immediate safety concerns, but I understand how search is abused.

@CrazyMyrathis seems really complicated to me. there's visibility to search engines, browsers and apps that perhaps differs based on who the user appears to be. but there's also privacy settings for users, instances and app capabilities. what happens to our conversation if we've chosen differently? a Venn diagram from hell. and then what do prospective users do when deciding where to invest their time? some will be concerned about safety, others (like journalists) might want max visibility.

@wjmaggos That would work better. At the moment, no one is respecting others' rights to NOT be searched. You're only truly safe on your own instance - with you the only user - and federated to no other instance. That's what I'm getting at.
