This is good, but also highlights the need for a fediverse brand/icon that’s not Mastodon, as the platforms that succeed for big organizations may well not actually be Mastodon. https://mastodon.social/@drewharwell/109553083544613990 (Unless the ship has already sailed and it’s too late to rebrand the concept.)

@anildashI don't much care with regard to competing microblogging tools - let them all be Mastodon and compete to differentiate. But the growing number of other kinds of things need us to promote the protocol too. I use Plume and PixelFed and they are not part of that category.

@anildash 100%. This was also brought up around GitHub adding support for "Mastodon" links (via @liaizon): https://social.wake.st/@liaizon/109526478617409154

@matt @anildash thanks for the tag! Yeah I have been talking about this a lot lately. @raphael and I have brain storming the idea of the ⁂ (asterism symbol) being a really good simple identity for the fediverse as a whole (the name asterism originates from the astronomical term for a group of stars) and it can be recognized at small sizes and adjusted and changed in lots of different ways while still being recognizable.

@liaizon I like it because it's in the neighborhood of ∴ the sign for "therefore."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therefore_signThe fediverse symbol I've seen, of five points all equally connected to each other, misses a main fediverse feature for me: that not all points are equally connected, and that's an asset (or at least a neutral) not a detriment.@matt @anildash @raphael
