I'm still looking for my "forever Linux laptop." The one I'll put ALL my stickers on. At one point I thought it would be the @system76 Oryx Pro, but 17-inchers are too big and too power hungry. Then I wanted it to be be an Apple Silicon Mac, but ARM compatibility with apps has me a little concerned. Should I just do what everyone else has been doing and buy a #ThinkPad? The T-14 looks pretty sweet.

@killyourfm @system76 Personally I'd go with the #ThinkPad . My current daily is a P14S AMD Ryzen 5 and I love it. Certainly lasts all day and everything works under #ArchLinux .

@killyourfmI'm considering a Thinkpad for the same reason, although I don't like the keyboard layout. As a European I'm not sure about system76 warranty support. Not a fan of MacOS but I didn't really consider installing Linux on a Mac. Is that advisable at all? Another option I'm considering is Dell XPS 13 plus.

@killyourfm @system76 wouldn’t recommend a Thinkpad. I currently have one, and the entire laptop is hardware-bricked (requires motherboard replacement) if I turn on the wrong BIOS settings on (e.g. turn on Secure Boot). Not to mention it turns into an oven frequently, the chassis is made of plastic, the screen is plastic, the touchpad is small, the keyboard layout is funky (fn to the left of ctrl), and it abruptly goes into suspend mode when I put an iPad on top of the keyboard.

@killyourfm I’m curious which apps you are concerned about with the M1?I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon gen9 which runs perfectly under Fedora (sans facial sign in as I’m too lazy to setup howdy). Battery life is better than Windows 11, Intels GPU might be a deal breaker depending on your needs :/

@killyourfm @system76 I just ordered the new ThinkPad T14s with AMD Ryzen 6850U for work. It is small enough, with a full day battery life, super quiet and fast. You can even order it with Ubuntu pre-installed and everything should work very well with Linux.Review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T14s-G3-AMD-laptop-review-Quiet-and-efficient-workhorse-with-Ryzen-power.682906.0.htmlLinux benchmarks with the smaller X13 version: https://www.phoronix.com/review/amd-ryzen7-6850uLinux benchmarks vs. Apple M2: https://www.phoronix.com/review/apple-m2-amd-ryzen

@kerfuffle I can understand not liking the keyboard layout. But I will say Thinkpads inarguably have the best keyboard comfort and overall feel. But maybe in your case, an XPS 13 is worth exploring? The displays on those are incredible.

@killyourfm @system76 For real. I'm really hoping next time I need a laptop (which isn't looking like it's any time soon, stupid diminishing reutrns on hardware progress 😆) that I'll scratch together the coins for a Framework. The ethics and the repairability *and* abilty to actually upgrade are a big yes from me.

@killyourfm @system76 Let's wait and see what the Framework 16 is like when it's officially out. From what I know so far you can add a second battery and own multiple so that could be a good solution especially if you want a powerful laptop that isn't a mac.

@killyourfm I will say that the MacBooks hit the "screen, speakers, battery life" trifecta with good build quality. I haven't tried running Asahi but I already see this as a long-term machine for me.I do own a System76 Oryx and can confirm they are loud and power hungry.

@killyourfm the eternal question. I have a small dell I’ve been running Nobara on for a bit. It’s good for times I need a small laptop when out and about. The battery is lame though. I’ve been looking at some other options too. I guess it’s time for a L4E Show.
