       @neil Could be. I was once utterly thrown by a map outside a tube station on which North was down. I wasted half an hour walking a mile in the wrong direction and back.

       @neil @m0rpk Maps are sometimes oriented such that up corresponds to the direction ahead when facing them. Makes it easier when you don't know which way north is.

       @neil @m0rpk That's why it's good practice to always check the orientation of maps. You never know how they've been mounted.

       @mansr @neil Yes, definitely my fault for being a stupid user in a hurry, and not poor UX design given the convention that North is usually up on maps.

       @m0rpk @neil In some countries, up=ahead is by far the most common for public maps. Elsewhere, up=north dominates. Obviously, the map you encountered should have been more clearly marked.
