Things I learned last week: my students said they had not realized #Poland played such a large role in #WWII. That is: their high school courses had of course indicated that the outbreak of the war had to do with Poland, but they had barely known more than that.On the one hand, I am not surprised: high school courses have little time for detail and of course see things from an Americacentric point of view. And yet . . .

@CitizenWald If they're history majors, they should be doing reading on their own in addition to what they learned in school. That's what I did. Of course, that was 40 years ago....

@CitizenWald It took me a while, as an Australian who didn't study modern history at high school, to figure out that USA was a latecomer to WW2 and didn't win it almost single handedly, with a little help from my home country.

@historian1661 True, of course. But most are not: they're1st- & 2nd-year students with a general curiosity about the era. 1 or 2 seem to have some background, but it's often the usual military stuff. Anyway, I share these tidbits not in order to criticize.. Rather, I am genuinely curious, and I think both they and I find it helpful to begin some units by asking what they know and how the readings have broadened their knowledge and perspectives. And now I think the *will* read more on their own

@CitizenWald Well, you're much more accomplished than I am, you are actually a published academic. I don't even have a PhD.
