RedditIn the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.I'm really hopeful about the rise of the open Internet, #Fediverse, #Mastodon etc. We need this. #SocialMedia

@rolle I've been using #Reddit more. I loved StumbleUpon. I have spent more time on my @Flipboard #Android app now that you can use it as a #Mastodon client. At least an hour a day. I used to do my Flipboard reading on the weekends. It's the 4th most used app on my phone now.#FlipBoard #Fediverse #SocialMedia

@rolle I complained and blogged about the change from conversations to hashtags in 2007, as well as about the emerging cult of personality, the idealising of million follower accounts. I was way ahead, with my criticism. I saw the flaws decades before others.

@rolle I Miss StumbleUpon and hope that something similar comes out with ActivityPub! I think the other “big one” that would be on my list from 2010 is Google Reader.

@rolle One of my other comments is that social media forgot about ROI for users. They focused so much on ROI for corporate and PR interests that they forgot that users need a reason to stick around.

@rolle Does the low amount of main social medias also positively affect your mental health?I have noticed that it's really mentally draining for me to first stare computer at work and then stalk various social media channels during my free time.

@rolle IIRC Insta sells your data.In 2010 I was curating from Google Reader to FB.Now I curate from Feedly to (my other account on) Masto, because they have a button for it, very convenient. But I don't doubt they sell me in exchange.

@rolle in 2010, I was Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare(!), and Flickr. In 2023, I'm on 1) Mastodon and that's pretty much it. I occasionally check the other services for people trying to contact me, but my daily driver social media is 100% Mastodon; I seem to have found my place.
