is it weird to get chills when i hear an entire crowd unite to sing the national anthem? like, not the lame muttering singing a bunch of people do, but like, when they belt it.

@graf well thats something... do they go nuts for your national anthem? or not as much anymore?i feel like national pride is something separate from the current political climate. you can love your country and what it should stand for, but still abhor everything thats happening around you at the time

@feathered It's rare to actually hear it. People get into the swing of Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem but God Save the King always has a school assembly quality to it.Could be worse though, could be the US anthem. Whoever decided to use that tune had been drinking.

I’m proud to say the Canadian national anthem is one of the four national anthems I have memorized. It’s a really fun song.Hello out there, were on the air it's hockey night tonight! The tension grows, the whistle blows, and the puck goes down the ice.The goalie jumps, and the players bump, and the fans all go insane.Someone roars: "Bobby Scores!"At the good old hockey game!Oh!The good old hockey game! Its the best game you can name! And the best game you can name, is the good old hockey game!

@IsraelDelendaEst listening to land of hope and glory now. it has a really peppy start, but then it's the graduation song. whats your official anthem? or is there one?i like our anthem here in the states. if you want to blame the writer, they'd be french, so... i think it fits really well, as it was written during or about the revolutionary war when we gained our freedom from england. a very important time for us obviously.im sure all anthem as meaningful to their citizens. i think the ones that are only music with no lyrics are kind of weird

@feathered It's God Save the King, and the US anthem's tune is nicked from some choir society's drinking song - that's why nobody can sing it right, it's supposed to be hard for laughs. Most US anthems are repurposed British tunes.

@IsraelDelendaEst if wikipedia is right, it was actually a poem by an american lawyer about a battle during the war of 1812, so we're both wrong, sort of. more me than you, because i cant remember things from school apparently. i guess the music itself was a british song like you said.i also see 'my country tis of thee' was a sort of national anthem for us before the star spangled banner, and is literally just 'god save the queen', but instead of singing about a ruler, we decided it was better to sing about the landit makes sense that a ton of early songs were british music with american lyrics. i mean, many of us were still from the generation where you WERE british/english/french/whatever

@feathered The words aren't the reason nobody can sing it. Yet.

@feathered No it's actually a really hard song to sing properly, by design. They had to simplify the US version and it's still not easy for an untrained singer.
