this is not ok. @Mastodon should know better. this is an explicitly anti fediverse direction to take and if this doesnt cause a massive pushback against the mastodon project I would be very surprised.

@liaizon @Mastodon outside of this bubble this is THE major point of criticism when moving to the Fediverse. If you can just sign up to Mastodon Social you can still move later. If we cannot prioritize these complaints the Fediverse will never grow and all the Dezentralisation will not matter anyways.

@pkreissel @Mastodon there are may ways for the on boarding experience to be smoothed out. This is antithetical to the future I want to live in. this is antithetical to decentralization. you just as easily could have a group of servers that are vouched for and that selection would be randomized and that would solve both of these complaints at once

@liaizon @Mastodon I specially love how the two buttons are a textbook definition of an anti-pattern by having "Join mastodon.social" looking like an actual button and decent contrast while the more decentralised option blends in the background.

@pkreissel @liaizon @Mastodon “you can still move later”except move is buggy, the cooldown period will prevent you from retrying, you need to follow others once again and wait for their approval, there are servers that do not support Move yet, and there is no reliable way to move your post and interaction histories.not to mention in a HUGE server like this there can’t be any decent moderation to prevent unprivileged people from getting hurt.

@pkreissel @Mastodon @liaizon And people will think "Fediverse == Mastodon == mastodon.social" which is utterly harmful.

@Mastodon @liaizon @pkreissel Oh, and NEVER forget there are people who face excess internet censorship, and ANY large enough website with user-generated content will be BLOCKED and not accessible to them.

@tusooa @pkreissel @Mastodon exactly, the account moving feature has so so many issues. last time I tried I had literally hundreds of followers that the move didn't work for... and then also all the old mentions are linked to the old account, each client then handles the "dead" account in different ways. also the old account gets auto completed when someone tries to mention you still on most software.

@liaizon @tusooa @pkreissel @Mastodon And it seems like account deletions are somehow broken on mastodon side of things.Which isn't entirely surprising given that they swamp the fediverse (and the server queue) with per-post deletes on account deletion…

@tusooa @Mastodon @liaizon the solution is to fix the move feature, not keep people from having a simple access to the Fediverse. You cannot have the cake and eat it too. It’s more important for people to join now and bring their networks than everything being extremely dezentralized.

@pkreissel @Mastodon @liaizon look at how email is dominated by big corps (tm/mc) and reflect on your opinions: once it got centralized, it's real hard, if not impossible at all, to decentralize it again.

@liaizon @Mastodon I expected this to happen, but from VC backed apps rather than the fediverse!Time for the decentralised fediverse is limited either way so I'm not overly concerned. Maybe it is better than the alternative while we build a truly decentralised alternative.

@liaizon @Mastodon full agree – it’s the exact wrong approach to take.bringing people into a decentralised network means they will have to have some understanding of it. streamlining that away only solves a superficial problem and creates a fundamental one.i know it’s hip to think that everything must have a highly simplistic interface and having to think is seen as a failure of design, but that does not hold true when gaining an understanding is an inherent part of the task to solve. you can’t abstract that away and expect to solve it.all that is going to happen is that we’ll be stuck mimicking centralisation, and mimicking the models of the centralised social networks. instead of moving beyond both.

@gekitsu you get it. this is really strikingly worrisome. and the amount of power in the hands of gargron, not the community, is really really fucked up at this point.

@liaizon it is frustrating that he knows what he's doing, and it will never get fixed as long as people keep acting like it's all just a big misunderstanding on his part.

@Moon @liaizon I suggest people go to pleroma instances or soapbox. But the not smart people on fedi will act like children. I don't care anymore.
