i think i got this idea in a book about Moasic, but id love to write about how SO MANY people in the mid 80s to mid 90s thought the future of information was through the TV, and it led to SO MANY complete market failures

@nkizz This is the element of "Past Tense" DS9 episode set in 2024 that ages the worst, even more so than the fashion. "Net access, channel 90"

@nkizz I guess the person running it just liked vintage tech? I mean the office was full of Lisa's

@nkizz Feels like one of those things where a kid had an ad or manual for one but not the actual device and read it over and over again and imagined all these possibilities that never came to be. (Not me with my dad's atomic power propaganda comic book!)

@nkizz Your dream, my reality 😂. Are these from the later seasons?Tele/Videotext in the U.S. was frequently declared as “the future,” while simultaneously completely undermined by everyone trying to get a piece of the action $$$-wise. It also completely ignored the fact that in the U.S., people could and did actually buy computers in the 80s, as opposed to 70s U.K., where they didn’t.

@DosFox @nkizz I always read it as setting the entire universe in this sorta "outside of time" idealized spy setting. Modern, but with a real golden age James Bond vibe mixed in there.

@Feasoron @DosFox oh totally, it's more that kind of setting usually uses super well known tropes to set it in time, and especially for american audiences, there aren't many people with a super strong association with it
