@TheFrenchTickler Our little garden currently has a duck swimming above it. We were going to try raised beds this year with more variety but we'll have to either do a french drain or grade the land so it doesn't dip this badly and flood like this. Hard to tell from the two pics I put up but it's a good 3 to 4 inches of standing water at the deepest.

@white_male @Jim This is rather cute because of the big eyes and cartoonish look. Unfortunately they grow to be ±1.5 meters and live as long as a human. I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that, although it would probably take care of the skunks.

@Jim @TheFrenchTickler If you want to be lazy about it, I like the fabric smart pots. Dry out fairly quick in the summer, but it keeps everything from getting drowned if it rains a lot.

@SavageGerbil @TheFrenchTickler It's not so much the work of it that I'm worried about with the initial set up. Like the french drain I'll end up paying for materials and have friends and family come over to help set it up. It's a pretty fair trade, they come out for the day, I feed everyone bbq and beer. But yeah I hadn't heard of smart pots. Jem and I have been just sort of reading up on stuff and watching different youtubers like Nialls garden (he used little raised plots with composting and cardboard to get good grow results). We aren't aiming for anything too crazy just some basic stables and herbs. A nice relaxing hobby more than an attempt to reap a huge harvest.

@Jim @TheFrenchTickler Dude, even if you go half assed with the amount you plant, the majority of what you grow will get gifted to friends, family and neighbors. Don't skip the green onions, they're great fresh from the yard.For soil mix, I've always bought some yard mix and a bag of perlite, mix it up in the pot. Good drainage, works well, and it's cheap

@Jim @SavageGerbil @TheFrenchTickler I've been growing things on simple raised beds in my garden since moving out of the city a couple years ago, and aside from being a relaxing hobby I enjoy, what has been truly incredible is just how good our tomatoes taste. The store bought ones taste like wet cardboard now, I suspect they get picked up green and allowed to mature during transport and storage.Other vegetables (like zuccinni) are not worth it in my opinion, they take a lot of space / work, are cheap at the store, and I can't really tell the difference. But home grown tomatoes are incredible, so tasty and juicy, particularly if you look for special breeds - I'm mostly focusing on Italian varieties. I'm now researching how to build a proper greenhouse so I can grow them during winter as well.Other things to grow at home that are significantly better than store-bought produce are peppers and pumpkins, there is a surprising amount of different varieties in seed form that I haven't seen fresh as well (though pumpkins take an enormous amount of space).
