#mastodon is now hiding comments criticizing their decision to push users to sign up to mastodon.social, marking them as "off-topic" (which makes it not show unless you click it)starting to think they knew what they were doing by making this changecc @thatonecalculator @feditips #fediverse

@nano @april @thatonecalculator @feditips Damn, you people are really something else.“They knew what they were doing", "actively hostile”, "part of their plan”, "disgusting”, "extinguish" - the wording you're choosing here could be about a war scenario, when in reality we're talking about an iOS app.Nobody is preventing you from creating your own app, coming up with an alternative welcome screen. Also, the comment was posted 2 weeks -after- the change was merged: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/pull/1005

@fnwbr@chaos.social @nano@yiff.life @april@toot.dummy.cafe @thatonecalculator@stop.voring.me anyway, something to be said for the fact that your position relies entirely on what's possible in principle, and not on the effect in practice.New users don't understand what Fediverse is, when they look up the "Mastodon" they've heard so much about, for most of them, what they find is dictated by Rochko, and no-one can do anything about it. So, if his funnel says that Mastodon is mastodon.social, that's where they end up. Moving after then is a lot more friction. In principle they could use another app, in principle they could get that information elsewhere, in principle they could use something else which implements Mastodon's dialect of AP, in principle they could move instance, but this is a lot of "in principle" caveats to Rochko's consolidation of power which rely entirely on what could theoretically happen, instead of what it actually does.If you don't care about the fate of open systems, that's your choice of course, but you're not going to get very far demanding this apathy from others.

@aprilAs hesitant as I may be to invoke the G word I'm really starting to feel like we're being gaslit by shit like this...Like they're making so many little, incrementally bad decisions that encourage centralization and whenever you point it out you're inevitably confronted by a chorus of 27 year old dudes yelling at you for overreacting. The pattern of behaviour paints a larger picture
