Would you want your next Linux computer (as in, a laptop or desktop) to be ARM-based instead of x86?#arm #desktop #laptop #linux

@boilingsteam if it means a laptop with a better battery life then I am all in.

@boilingsteam I'd prefer RISC-V. That being said I have ARM devices and, while they can be daily driver ready for basic tasks, neither can fully replace an x86 desktop or laptop for me yet.

@boilingsteam the specific architecture means a lot less to me then the functionality. I value performance per watt, and reduced heat, which ARM currently has the edge in. It also needs to have the libraries and software for me to do what I'm trying to do, where x64 currently has the edge.If I was shopping today (I'm not) I'd probably be looking at the modern lower TDP AMD chips. Or maybe a Mac Mini, if Asahi looks ready.

@boilingsteam I would have said absolutely yes but then Ryzen 5000 series came out and it kicks ass.Show me a fundamentally secure UMPC to bridge the gap between laptop and smartphone and I'll consider ARM seriously.

@boilingsteam None of the above. ARM feels like some sort of strange halfway house between x86_64 & RISCV. It's just a low further along in development. I would love for RISCV to reach parity. Then I would buy that.

@boilingsteam If it were to be a RISC CPU, then I'd like it to be RISC-V over ARM

@wydamn ARM and low power consumption is not really a thing unless you have state of the art lithography process like Apple

@ridge how about the fact that it would need non-mainline patches to work? would that be a problem?
