I keep seeing accounts where people have set up a Mastodon profile to mirror some individual’s Twitter feed, and i can’t get over how inappropriate and invasive it feels to me. If someone made an account *for me* on a social media service I’d chosen not to sign up for, I’d feel upset about that.

@darius It feels like it sees individuals’ social media profiles as just “content” to be consumed.

@misty is this the modern day equivalent of making a shrine to someone famous?

@misty it also basically makes it impossible for that person to ever come to mastodon because uhhhh how do you say "actually all those other accounts aren't me" with how masto and fedi works

@misty @darius Also pretty interesting because by posting things on certain mastodon servers (notably m.s) you are granting certain license rights to any recipient and if you're mirroring someone else without permission then you obviously don't hold such rights to relicense…

@misty The only such account I follow is a bot that mirrors the official Formula 1 account. Since that's not a person but a business, in my mind I file it ethically more like pirating software.

@misty I’ve wondered how I’d feel about this lately. Not that I’m anyone of note. But I genuinely think because I left Twitter to dissociate with it, I’d be pretty disappointed to find my mastodon feed mirrored there. I don’t *want* to be there. It comes down to consent. Here, I’m interacting, over there I’d be being consumed as ‘content’ unbeknownst to me. It was an act on principle. As is my right. Don’t erase that choice for me. And because Twitter has no moderation anymore, you’d never get it removed on the grounds of impersonation. As an EU citizen I have the right to be forgotten. Good luck getting that enforced when all the staff have been fired.
