The problem with public transit is that they insist on being profitable. Being profitable makes no sense, because the only thing you can do is cut back routes or raise prices and that means less people ride the transit, causing more future cutbacks. Transit needs to serve the people and if you have the best transit system in the world, eventually the chase of profit will make it too dysfunctional to attract riders.

@justinto And this is why public transit needs to be seen as infrastructure. Roads and bridges are of themselves not profitable, but failure to invest in them diminishes everyone's livelihood. So also public transit.

There is a lot of senior citizens in this area. The next bus stop is very far away. This will leave a lot of people housebound.

@justinto Public transit *is* profitable. But the profits don't accrue on the transit operator's balance sheet, rather in our communities and environment.
