@stux Pickup trucks are great vehicles... for doing what they were actually designed to do (haul cargo, tools, etc for work, drive on rough terrain, etc).Buying them as urban cruisers is beyond ridiculous. I mean, do these people hate having good visibility and love having difficulty parking?

@stux I hate trucks as much as the last guy, and this is in no way a defense of them....BUT damn are they comfortable to sit in. In cars I feel like I'm slouching, but in trucks I can actually sit upright. Tall person problems 😩Luckily I don't need to own a vehicle at this point in my life! And I probably won't need to for another 4-5 years.

@stux this post reminds me a lot of Reddit. Mindless manufactured rage, two entirely different classes of trucks (single vs dual cab), heavy duty vs light duty, plus decades of safety and comfort engineering changes. That little one can’t handle a pallet of tiles or cement without dangerously overloading the suspension or putting the driver/other drivers at risk.

Or cities can save themselves millions every year trying to keep roads together that are being destroyed by those monsters. The upside is kids don’t get killed either.

@stux This is a pretty disingenuous comparison as the pickup in the front in a regular cab Toyota Tacoma and one older then 20 years as it looks like a late 90s model, which was a compact pickup model. Which the comparison is to a full sized, crew cab, F150. Even 20 years ago the F150 with a super cab was huge. That said as an owner of a 2022 Tacoma with the smallest cab available it is certainly a bit larger then the old 1990s models. Nobody makes a good compact pickup anymore. :(

@stux Those are two different models of truck. Even 20 years ago, the smaller one was the small pickup truck in the lineup (probably a GMC Jimmy or Chevy S-10)

@stux I had an Isuzu P'up for a couple years, late 90s. I remember it fondly because I got it cheap from a friend who'd used it hard, & it kept ticking when I desperately needed reliable transportation. But it was like the smaller one here (which looks like a Ford Ranger, maybe?). I never really used it *as a pickup*.Sold it to a guy who needed a small truck to move long distance & then run a small contracting biz in the south. Who knows, that thing might still be running.

@stux Those little trucks were the best. They sipped gas (compared to other stuff at the time, at least), they were well built, and on 100°+ days the A/C would cool the tiny cab down in minutes.

@stux It’s like the concept of the “pickup truck” has reached the stage of 90s cartoons where they’ve strayed too far from the original show and it’s just dumb and weird. Mainly because they want to sell new toys. I’m looking at you cybernetic humans and clones of animal/human hybrids in Gargoyles! (I think… I might be remembering that wrong.)

@stux As much as I agree with your post about oversized vehicles, it's not really a good comparison, which mutes your argument somewhat. A modern crewcab 4x4 is not the same as a low end non-4x4 pickup just because they both have the same description "pickup". I have a 1996 F250 4x4 crew cab; it also towers over your example 20 year old truck and is is of course much more capable vehicle in terms of carrying people, towing trailers and use off-road or in snow/ice.

@stux@trisweb I know someone here in the UK who has something like that behemoth - he's not a farmer, or construction worker, or anyone who would need that load carrying capacity, he works nights in a supermarket. And he lives in a large town, not somewhere 30 miles deep in a forest. He just thinks they are cool, and doesn't mind the extortionate fuel bills. He wants to try coal-rolling, but the modifications would mean it had no chance of ever passing its MOT ever again.

@stux @FediThing this is not progression.I say that so definitively because I am confident in the assumption upon which it depends - that this type of vehicle was specifically designed *for work*. I guess you could also toss in the fact that I grew up engaged in a pretty wide spectrum of that work using pickups to do it.and once again we come back to *curb weight*

@stux Not just pickup design. I saw an older pickup about the size of the smaller one on the road yesterday and my first thought was "wow, that pickup is smaller than most of the newer SUVs on the road"

@stux "Okay, so we haven't actually hauled anything in our monster truck. But we MIGHT. There was that one time we had to bring those couple of 2x4s and that tray of marigolds back from the home supply store at the same time, remember? Would have been SO much easier if we had us a pickup truck!"

@stux you're not wrong, and I agree with the point you're trying to make. But this is like comparing a cat to an elephant. They also made big trucks 20 years ago, the Tacoma just wasn't one of them. Compare that Tacoma to a modern one and you'll still see a striking change in size. I miss small trucks :(

@stux carrying capacity up 2.5%. Killing capacity up 250%!I’d bet a modest sum that Dodge ends up using some variation on that as a slogan in the next twenty years.

@stux I work in the construction equipment rental industry. I do understand throwing shade at the "lifted" monster trucks, and the shiny status trucks. Apples and Oranges. A Ford Ranger and a Ford F150 are not designed to do the same things. Trucks, from the dealer, whose frames are higher are designed to tow large equipment. I own a 1980's F250 and you do need to clamber into the drivers seat and getting into the bed is a feat, but I can also tow a 10,000 lb track-hoe. A Ranger can't.

@stux for those who don't know. this isn't because of consumer demand. This is because the larger the vehicle is in the US the less environmental tax the manufacturers pay (because you want to encourage big 18-wheelers to carry many things instead of many small cars carrying few things) BUT this also means if they make bigger vehicles they may more profit (less tax). Note that the truck got bigger, but not the bed size.

@stux major improvements. Since this is a "pickup" truck, you impress the ladies much more with bigger cab and fully reclining seats so easier to pickup ladies. Also, far less traumatic to drive since you don't see the kids you run over and there is no blood splattered all over the windshield when you hit a kid since they are thrown under the truck. Pretty sure the designers got bonuses for all those improvements 😟

@stux @leigh The problem is the US tax code. Vehicles over 6000 pounds are deductible as a business expense, lighter ones are not:https://www.taxplanning.com/single-post/vehicles-over-6-000-poundsThat's why GE is discontinuing the Bolt EV (despite how well it's selling) and replacing it with an SUV.

@stux@mstdn.social The small truck will be used by an actual contractor or tradesman and the bed will be full of supplies and used for hauling. The larger truck will be used by some officer worker living in the suburbs who never hauls anything in the back.

Your choices are a midsize 'lifestyle' truck with a tiny bed that can't carry anything, a giant truck with a crew cab ...and a tiny bed that can't carry anything, and a land tank.
