One more #AI generated image that causes furore - Boris Eldagsen won the Sony world photography award with a work that he describes as "promptography".I really appreciate his thoughtful comments about AI - especially that he's fascinated with Plato's theory of pure form!“Many people, when they complain about AI, say it’s copying and stealing. It’s not, it’s learning the Platonic theory.”Great quote. Though the world might not agree. We're going to be back to the #copyright debates of the 00s any time soon.https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/apr/18/ai-threat-boris-eldagsen-fake-photo-duped-sony-judges-hits-back

@tarkowski You can only make that Platonic argument by ignoring the human labour involved in shaping the initial computer model, and by ignoring that these programs replicate the average, not the ideal. To carry the analogy further, this tech creates shadows, not forms.

@bhaggart all fair points. I still appreciate that Eldagsen stated his position, it's an interesting one. He'd probably argue that from the caves that we sit in it's hard to distinguish shadows from forms :)

@bhaggart also, you're right, Eldagsen seems to treat AI systems as tools for his creativity, and ignores the stuff inside the blackbox (corporate power / labour exploitation, etc.)
